Rigging Dogs

Post by CoonBaumer »

How do you know if your dog is going to be a rig dog? Do you train him or it just will come? Any advice would be great! Thanks!

P.S. I rode into my drive way and then turned around and went to the back of my property and when I had parked the truck and came back to the house, my hound had obviously known there had just a coon there. But I didn't even get the coon out of the truck, I just pulled in and then went out. Well my hound was right by the drive way and had his nose in the air smelling and barking like crazy! Do you think that he will make a rig dog?

You just gotta get him going on coon where he knows what you want him to chase and then put him on the rig and find out. For me it was just a natural thing I always walk hunted my dogs when they were young. When their first bear season came tossed then in the box and they started striking. I think it is a combination of natural ability and training Nose is natural ability. But getting them used to the box is training. I believe experienced dogs can train inexperienced did to strike cooker tracks as well
