Fact or fiction?

Is there any truth behind the claim that a male coonhound is better than a female coonhound or that a female coonhound is better than a male coonhound at hunting bobcat, what is all the bobcat hunters opinion on this

I know of a lot of great cat dogs that are female.. they tend to be smarter

In my experience with coon dogs I have had way more females that were damn good dogs but the very best I have ever seen were males. That being said it is only my experience. Same way with coyote hounds too though.

There is absolutely no difference between males or females as a whole. Each dogs ability is based in part by its genetics and how it was raised and trained.

Here is my take, worth exactly what you paid for it......

Females are, in my mind, more reliable. They are only in heat once or twice a year. So the balance of the time they are basically the same dog every time you turn them out.

Males on the other hand are in heat every day. They may catch a smell of someone's butt that gets more of their attention one day compared to the last or next day. This can lead to "off days" way more often than females. Don't get me wrong, when they are having a good day, I find it hard to ask for a better dog. On a bad day, I find it easy to ask for a stick or shock controller .

I'm with Dan on this one, the best dogs I've seen for bear and yotes tended to be males. Better cat and coon dogs shaded more towards females. Just my observations from hunting. Seen good in both though. I usually am more concerned with the parents than the sex.

I think it depends much more on the individual dog's ability and experience than whether they're male or female... I've personally always preferred females (mine have always been more reliable). I would imagine a cut female and a cut male would be about the same, if everything else is equal... I have a male that thinks he's a female, and a female that thinks she's a male (what are the odds... ), any they're equally good
