The making of a summer dog/rig box from the scrap yard

Post by jeff »

I was visiting the local dump, and seen all kinds of old racks, frames of
nice 1"x 1"x 1/16" thin wall, old treadmills that had some nice box steel, that would be nice for the rig railings & steel grating of all sorts,
H'mmm
I thought, I know steel prices are way up, all scrap is at this time. So instead of just asking them for it, I had a couple of old engine blocks laying around so I asked to trade for the much lighter scrap box tubing that they were going to crush at some time and they siad hell ya. I was a happy camper, last year I used a couple of plastic 55gal. drums, to haul my young hounds around, so my plan was to upgrade.

Im broke, so I thougt I would put a little sweat/labor into a new summer rig box for the hounds to stay cool in this summer.

I have a old Lincoln welder/stick, (wish it was a mig or a tig) cuz I aint worth a dang with stick welders, but I got a good hand grinder for the excess, their will be plenty im sure.

Anyhow I thought I would share with all of you, that may want to make a rig box real cheap!! from the "Bone Yard" all kinds of goodie's their.
here is a couple of pics of my project in the making.

I like your rig. I have one similar to it. I like how yours sets inside your bed holes. Mine doesn't. This may be elementry but, I have a question. Why did you put the wire mesh on the sides?

Hey Hunter,
Thanks for the comments,

On your question, to be honest with you no real good reason, I just think, I will like the way it guides the dogs head to me when I call or pull the 20" coated cable w/ bullsnap, that I plan on using at times on certian hounds,to put on their tracking collars, kind of locks them in so to speak, helps hold them still, instead of a completely open side. This is all in my head, things that I feel might make life easier when things are getting pumped up like they do at times when dogs are being put in a race.

Like I siad this is just my thinking, It may not help out at all, I just noticed alot of guys that I have ran with, always seem to say, hold this dog back or stop this one from bailing out cuz I want that one only, I am just trying to make it easy on my self, cuz this years training season I will be on my own trying to get my young hounds going.

Take care,

Jeff

Any of y'all got plans for a cheap and easy dog box...something out of plywood, on the lighter side for a short-bed nissan?
