Cool or Differant

Post by Varminator »

Once while running a cat with Loyd Basey (deceased) the dogs had made a lose on a crows foot road junction. We didn't move and watched the 4 dogs run across, up, down and around trying to find the cat. Then one dog jumped up on a high Old Growth stump and with his neck stretched out started winding. Then as he was turning his head Stopped!! Pumped his nose and off he went, hit the track and started screaming jump.
It was like striking a hot track off the Rig!!

Let's hear some cool or different things you witnessed.. Some may have seen what I spoke of or what you have seen, but some may have not??

Just a short break from Politic! Then give'em the "FACTS" !!!!

Was hunting the dogs in front of the truck the other night, older broke dog and one of the young dogs stopped and stuck their nose as high as they could acting like they winded, then the young dog stood up on her hind legs smelling as high as she could, then she started jumping stretching as high as she could, then one of the other young dogs started doing the same thing. There was a big sand pine right side the road, my buddy said there must be something in that tree. We looked hard and couldn't find anything, they kept doing that the whole time we were looking and they made several circles all around but never opened and finally came back and went on down the road hunting. Don't know what that deal was about but there was scent hanging high right there about rigging height I'd say but they couldn't smell it from the ground.

was running a cat with brad years ago with some hard running cat dogs. they had it running in a real tight circle about thirty or fourty feet off the road from us and it sounded like they were about to catch it on the ground when a good sized tom stepped out on the road a few yards from us. the dogs still sounded like they were looking at his ass in the brush and the cat sat down ,licked his ass and walked off up the road. we both started hollering "here he is here it is" dogs started popping out within a minute or so and were showing them where he was....we never even got a wiggle out of it after that! these dogs had treed thirty or more cats so far that winter. I often tried to figure that one out and so did brad. twenty years later, I brought that race up with brad and he lit up and said,,,aw hell you never figured that race out???? we was running both a female and a male we called them off the female.I know he lost just as much sleep as me before he figured it out and probably held back till I brought it up again lol

I wrote a story in the April1998 of Full Cry about this incident.I was roading my 3 females down an old logging road when my Babe dog stood up on her hind legs and made a big show of winding something up on the mountain.I had a good race and the girls treed the cat but it sticks out in my mind because she was standing up for such a long time.

Old Dog, Most on here are Houndsman and are not Kemmermen! Show us some cats in a tree this winter and we "might" let you put our hounds down "a little"!! Tell then keep "Dreaming" and good luck with no excuses... :)

A buddy and I had only run big dogs all our life but we bought a pack of rabbit beagles a while back. The first time we turned them out they jumped a rabbit and I mean it sounded like they were killing him just like a bobcat race when you get him in the short rows and you know he's got to fly, fight or climb as a famous cat hunter put it. I kept telling my buddy, their killing him, their killing him, they pulling the hair out of his tail. About that time a rabbit hopped out in the road, stopped, wiggled his nose, scratched behind his ear then hopped on across the road. A full 2 minutes or longer here come our pack in full cry sounding like they were looking at him. My buddy said, yeah their really killing him ain't they!

Tom Shepard always had a terrier with his hounds. I seen that dog check things out and if was a cold track come back and stand listening to the hounds. He always seemed to know when to get there and take it away from the hounds and jump it. And he would tree like hell. Wasn't much use if he didn't catch it in 5min. like most terriers but not all I've hunted with.

Rene Sears and I were roading the dogs, and turned down a short dirt road. We turned around without loading the dogs and roaded them back out. All at once the dogs started screaming and were running all around the rig when they caught a young bobcat right beside us. We jumped out and grabbed it from them. Then they went to treeing and three more was up a tree next to the road. Of course we never shot them, but I always wondered where those cats were when we drove by there 2-3min. earlier.

1bluedog,,sorry if it sounded like I was putting you're dog down. I didn't intend it that way. let me reword , I love a windy dog like you described and I find that trait in a lot of the worthless below average kemmers I have tried is all I meant in fact that windy trait is one of the things that inspired me to start fooling with curs. someday, I will have and breed some that look, sound, run, tree, catch like some of the hounds you guys have. then I will probably get bored again and try another strain?

I had a Bluetick Bitch that was working a cold cat track, when I heard a Coyote barking at her. I grabbed the gun and got to her as fast as i could. On the way I heard her Bark like she was fighting and then the Coyote would start barking again. When i crept up, I seen the dog trying to track the cat and the Coyote ran in and bit her on the ass. She turned and tried to bite the Coyote then went back to trailing. I shot the Coyote the next time it came in. I didn't catch the cat though!
I have shot Coyotes before when they came in on the Dogs but that was the coolest one!

Several years back John Warner shattered both his ankles when jumping a motorcycle. He was laid up for quite a while. He called and wanted me to take him out with the dogs, so I did. The Lord must have been with him that day and the next time(a week later) because he still couldn't walk without crutches, and got to see a Bobcat on the first hunt and a Cougar the second hunt. Both in trees and him sitting in the Rig. :D
