How much do you hear?

Post by mark »

In your part of the country, how much of a cat race do you hear? From strike to tree what percentage of the barking do you hear in a average race? Barking as in close enough to pick individual dogs out, not just echoes or a dull roar.

The country I hunt I get to hear very little of the race or trail job. Once in a while if I hit a hot one it won't make it out of the same canyon and I get to hear all the trail and jump. That said, I only get to hear a 5 to 20 minute jump. Most cats don't run very long if they are pushed. Dewey

How much do you hear?

All the country I hunt is private owned with lots of roads. By the time the dogs start getting out of hearing, they are getting close to another road in there, so I just jump in the truck and run around to the other road. That all said, I'm about like Twist, I'd guess I hear around 90% on average.

Hard to put a percentage on it, but I will say on average less than a third of each race. Another reason I like a hound that uses his mouth freely, providing he is on track and smelling game. Once in awhile get a rare treat and hear most of the race. Suspect another reason some have learn to like the Grey fox. Al

here probably 90% like south Texan says , roads everywhere, don't get out of hearing much, only disadvantage is a lot of the time the game will run the roads, and with sent conditions a lot of the time hounds cant smell it in the road the best and seem to want to hunt where it came out and wont drift on down it ! but other times he finds out quick he better not run the road not with all those teeth behind him, I have seen them run the roads a mile, as for hearing all the hounds giving tongue while running its one big roar mostly, a hound with an outstanding mouth sticks out ! high mouth dogs blend cant tell one from the other , while one that sqwalls out and chops can hear every time, I usually wont keep many high mouth dogs cause of not being to tell them apart

Same here as southtexas and southern fox they start getting away from one road ya can just drive around to the next one. Southern fox I have a problem picking the chop mouths when there are several in there, I think I can pick the high mouth ones pretty good and can hear them further

If one can not hear most of the race most of the times how can one know and be able to say what ones dogs are doing as to cold trailing, jump locate and tree? Which dog is doing what and when? Andy

Andy, one just has to depend on the percentage one can hear or see. It took a lot of time in the woods. but believe me, I did get it figured out & found in my experienced every dog had their days. Also a firm believer one has to be honest with himself about the dogs weak & strong points & I learned to talk dogs down a little, so when they had off days , no need to hang my head. Take care Al

al you got that right, brag on a dog and he will make you look like a idiot real fast, I believe they know you did it and want to show you ! I never pump one up cause a dog is a dog, some are better than others but in reality there still a dog and can do some of the stupidest things for being a dog, had a lot of people ask me about a good one , I say I have never seen a good one , some are sorrier than others, and a average hound eats the same as a sorry one but some never figure out the difference between the 2

Andy,

You think you knew the other one would get good! This one should have gotten better. But then you went and tried to let the truth get in the way of the bullchit stories of some. Shame on you

I'm not sure my dogs even open. I just sit in the truck and listen to old Pantera CDs and watch the Garmin.
