spaying or not
I would like to get some old timers opinions on spaying a young female if it helps with taking aggressive behavior out.

There is never a guarantee but it is your only option if it don't work they need to be culled. Andy

Re: spaying or not
What is the aggressive behavior and how old is this female? Spaying will probably make little difference. I have seen young dogs that are aggressive claiming the kill or aggressive at the food dish both of these things can be cured at a young age by not tolerating it from the start and correcting it. That usually will takes a lot of electricity and being on top of it from the start. Some females will be a pain their hole life. They can be hunted alone but can really mess up a young pup. Spaying is a good idea just to keep it from going forward. WE hunt dogs for the pleasure of it sometimes they are just not worth our time. It is our choice as to what we are really want to feed. She will sometimes face bite at another dog but it is not at every tree but she dont fight and never has been in a fight. The thing that bothers me is she just turned 2 and she will catch her own cat. Should I just sell her to some that maybe is looking to just hunt her with maybe one other dog that trees off the tree.

Dewey gave you some very good advice. I will say that spaying a female in my experience has never taken away from there ability, sure helps to avoid females in season when one needs to hunt them. I have no idea if spaying will help her problem, never spayed one for that reason. Good luck Al

Face barking will lead to a fight. Dogs like that can only ruin other dogs and friendships. Andy

Re: spaying or not
I've seen males that were cut for that reason. It didn't change their behavior at all.Why hunt a dog that you'll always be worried about? Thinking back all of the dogs that i've seen that were aggressive at the tree were very good cat dogs! That's probably why some guys just can't cull them .The really sad part is they'll go hunting with someone and forget to mention their dogs bad habit .

I dealt with one dog a friend had that was aggressive at the tree. I think all there doing is just taking claim kinda like a dog and its food kinda the same concept. Anyways I worked the dog on coons in a cage and pulling them up the tree Coon's are easy to get and there are an abundance of them. Well we worked the dog with one dog then went to two dogs so on so forth. If the dog showed any aggression we would get the dog and tie it back. For the remainder of the time, Next day same thing except when the dog showed the slightest bit of aggression we toned it then tied it back, next day we nicked it on the collar then tied it back. Did that a hand full of times, Two and a half season later we still have never seen any sort of problem. Seem'd to work. Now the dog wasn't all that bad but she would bully others off the tree never did face bark never did attack but she took claim to that tree alittle to much. And simple worked problem was solved.

I have two females I had to put in same kennel that come in the same time. Was in wis. bear hunting was short of kennel space. This started them being aggressive toward each other but did not bother other dogs. When they hunt together they are fine but can"t hall them in same box. Have seen some young dogs get aggressive when they first see game shot out to them they want to claim it. Most of the time they will get over it I would carry a backpack or large bag to carry game home. Mr.c.

Re: spaying or not
Face barking is how tree fights start. I would crack her over the face with a leash every time she does it. Shocking collars are fine for a lot of instances but in high excitement environments like a tree that can be all it takes to trigger a full blown tree fight. If you make it personal with a whip there is no question where the "discipline" is coming from. Couple years ago I had a 1.5 year old dog that I was always worried about a tree fight at the tree he never did anything aggressive but I always kept a eye on him as I didn't like the way he looked at the other dogs and his body posture at the trees, I don't know what happened but at one tree he and my Plott got into a serious fight. I had a serious problem getting them apart and ended up getting bitten several times by the 1.5 year old bluetick as he was trying to get away from me to attack the Plott again. That bluetick did not see the sunrise again. Last summer a friend of mine had a litter mate to the one I culled and he wanted me to run it on bear. The 2nd turn out this littermate started a fight with one of the other dogs while trailing he didn't get turned loose again. After the Bluetick/Plott fight my Plott became a lot more short tempered. If you have a dog displaying aggressive behavior it can become a cancer in your whole pack.
