how long to wait before runnin

Postby bbde17 » Sat Feb 14, 2015 8:50 pm

this may sound like a odd question, but how long to y'all wait before runnin a new hound (new as in purchased already runnin dog)?
reason for askin is i just baught a 2 year old bitch, and got her home and shes afraid of me, which is 100% understandable. ive been sittin by her house and coaxing her out of her house with treats, she lets me touch her but she dont stay long before diving back into her house. previouse owner said she was sometimes tough to catch before. ill keep hangin around her and pettin her up as much as possible till she gets used to me, just dont wanna let her loose to soon and never get my hands back on her lol.

Each dog is different of course but i like to wait at least a week . If she's not coming around by then she's extremely shy or has been mistreated by someone. In either case she might not get over it.That could even be the reason she was sold.

Once you get her less afraid try walking her on a leash I would not turn her loose until she is walking easy not pulling back or you having to drag her along. Also if you have an area that is fenced and several acres test her out in there before the woods. Good luck.

Dogs will all come around at different speeds.
Keep doing what your doing until she will confidently approach you.
Then start with on leash walks, even if its just around her area. Keep on doing that until she is confident and pulling forward. Then as another member suggested try her out in a large enclosed area that is fenced off. Once she is happy being on her own, try her in this fe ced area with your other dogs.

I wouldn't turn her loose until you are her best friend. I've never dealt with this because I've raised my dogs from pups, but I would gain some trust and then start taking her every where I could, try to socialize her some and spend as much time as you can with her... I guess just like I would do with a pup. You want her to feel like her new home is better than her old one.

I personally give a dog 2weeks minimum before running them. I like to let a dog adjust to new surroundings.

Adjustment time is always necessary just to make sure the dog handles well enough to take hunting and not have a train wreck. This dog is not a puppy. Puppies have an excuse and have a high probability of adjustment. If you are real handy as a dog trainer, you have hope, but your concern indicates that you may want to take the seller up on his offer and return the dog. This doesn't mean the dog isn't a good one, but maybe not the one for you. Enjoying a dog at home as we'll as in the woods makes the whole experience more fun.
