Cameron's on Bobcat

Post by BAR BAR 2 »

Ok guys, this is probably a dumb question and has probably been discussed before, but I couldn't find it.

Here lately I have been talking to a couple local guys about Cameron hounds on bobcat and they have said they will run them, but are too slow to actually put them in a tree. I'm curious if anyone else has had that sort of experience. Being as we are talking about hounds, a person can stumble onto all sorts of opinions and I am just looking for some answers before I spend money on something that isn't going to fit my needs.

There are many variables when it comes to hunting with hounds, so let's put this in broad and general terms. Is the Cameron bloodline fast enough to consistantly put cats in the tree?

There is something about the Cameron's you like or you would not be asking about them. If you want one, get one and enjoy it, discover its gifts and try to use it for whatever its gifts are best suited for. But if you want the best bobcat dog for your region my advice is to direct your research in that direction.

Don't set your sights on a certain breed but on a certain job you want a dog to do (no matter what breed you have to get to accomplish the task you have in mind). You are hoping the locals are wrong and you want some one to tell you they are wrong, evidently. Because, from an outsiders view, like me, you want a Cameron hound more than you want a bobcat dog.

I might be totally wrong, so I am going out on a limb here, but I am trying to help you. Study the successful bobcat hunters of your region, and start out by using the same dogs as they use. You can prove them wrong about the Camerons once you establish your success as a bobcat hunter using dogs that have already proven themselves for your area.

Or, just buy a Cameron hound and go bobcat hunting. Whatever you do, we wish you the best.

I may have worded my previous post wrong and given the wrong impression, if so, I apologize.

Cameron's are popular around this area, but most of the hunters are after lion and very few concentrate more on bobcat. To be honest, I don't really care what color a hound is. As long as it does what is asked of it and makes its owner happy, then it is a goodlooking hound.

I had no ulterior motives for my questions above and I was not looking for people to agree with me or to talk me into any particular bloodlines or breeds. Someone told me that this line was good at trailing cats, but was not fast enough to tree them and I just wanted to double check and see if others have had the same experience. There aren't too many bobcat hunters around to ask and asking the lion hunters will do me little good as they are obviously happy in their choice for lion hounds.

I've got some hounds to train a pup, but I need to find a good pup to start with. They aren't that easy to come across and that is the reason behind my questions about the Cameron's. If they have a better than even record for making decent bobcat dogs,I'll go ahead and buy one of the locals. If they aren't really fast enough though, or the nose power isn't really there, then I will continue my search. The goal is to find something and hopefully have it ready for some hard training by next season.

Thanks
Tex

Like Mr. Cobalt said;

Some work and some don't, especially when you buy them from the "local" Cameron breeder or the many overnight Cameron expert breeders.
Mr. Cameron, hounds are very cat minded at least the one's that I have been around. I have seen some very good one's. I know a pair of littermates at two year old, that treed or caught 36 bobcats on a single Texas ranch over a few weekends.
Whatever breed of hound, a slow, dumb hound will never make a good bobcat hound. The good Cameron hounds are very hard to find, but when you do, they are very hard to beat on cats.

Bar bar 2, if you want to have bobcat dogs, do yourself a favor and don't train your pups on lion or bear.

A Cameron dog is not a Cameron dog unless the guy who bred them is named Cameron, jmo. I agree with cobalt if your going to hunt bobcat don't run what your going to use on lion or bear or even coon for that matter. If your looking for a blue dog then buy a blue dog from someone like cobalt who is currently having success with the ones that they are hunting in the present time and raise one of them up. I know if I was going to get a blue dog that's who I would probably get one from. As far as being to slow I don't think you should look for a fast dog but a dog with track consistency as in always moving forward with the track and not just moving forward barking and sounding good but never progressing the track. I do think blue dogs can catch I've seen them do it, a friend of mine had one and consistently caught a lot of cats with her. Get what you want to look at and go bobcat hunting and enjoy your dogs what ever those dogs are.

Tim I agree, some of those blue dogs from Cobalt are nice dogs. I say some because I believe no one has a 100% that make good ones. The only hound I have hunted with from Cobalt, makes we wish I was young & healthy, for sure I would be looking for another Cobalt bred dog. Al

I appreciate everyone's responses. Asking a question like I did, I knew I was going to get alot of different answersand opinions, but that's ok. My only reason for the question was simply to clarify what I had heard a couple of locals say. It seems like this area is overrun with Cameron bred hounds and lion hunters are pretty thick around here, so it isn't easy to find a different type hound.

Luckily though, I have found a couple pups. I stumbled onto one deal with a lion hunter from south of here. He had a litter of walker/bluetick cross that he thinks may fit my needs, so I figured I would try one. The price was right.

The other pup I got is out of Twist's strain of walkers. He seems to put up alot of bobcats and has a good reputation for the line he has been working on, so I went ahead and jumped on a deal there. I've got some pup trainers to use and now I just need to start working with young dogs. Pups are always a gamble, but hopefully my research pays off.

Thanks for all the comments
