Anyone here run solo? I have been for the most part and really enjoy it. Gives me more time to evaluate my hounds and work on any corrections without dealing with others dogs. Anyone else do the same?

John, I do ever now and again for the same reasons you listed, But I do like the fellowship of others whether its just a buddy with or with out hounds

I hunt alone and when i get a hound i really like i hunt him alone ,without the help of other dogs .I want to see just how good he is.I have a grandson and my neice's boy that want to hunt so my solo days might be behind me.

I hunt alone most of the time or I should say with no one else with dogs. I don't like to hunt with other hounds than my own. I have guys that ride a long with me a lot. With mix packs I feel you are asking for trouble. I like a hunting partner but want the dogs to be raised together. AS far as hunting a young dog alone it is a good idea but it is nice to have a dog along that you know to judge him or her by. Everything but bobcat is trash to me. Most people aren't that way. I have loaned good dogs out to people and they come back saying it would not go with theirs. The dog just wasn't any good, well maybe that was true and again maybe not. Go figure. I hunt with my wife other than that no one else we take are best 2 dogs and a couple younger ones evaluate and to get them out and run get them some experience on the track and at the tree, and riding on the box

almost every time I hit the woods. The only time I join up is when clients bring their own dogs.

Our season for harvesting bears opens next Monday, the 12th. Just going to be me and four of my hounds. Won't be any rigging this opener as I am going up high in the mountains on foot. Found most of the mast up there and with training season upon us, I want to get up where no one else will be. Hope to have some pictures when I come down but one never knows.

I never walk hunted for bears with my hounds when I could, here they get out too quickly and the time it takes to walk back to the rig and get caught back up in a race is critical, I was never comfortable being a long way behind my hounds, it happened enough when I released them from the rig...I enjoy learning about hunting in different regions, please share some pictures of your free casting adventures...

Here is my perspective on my solo adventures:
I hunt alone for numerous reasons, mainly no one wants to stay gone or satellite out of a pickup for several consecutive days. I don't like to mix hounds together...It seldom works out well over time. Hard to find like minded handlers or dogs that compliment each other. I never keep more than three hounds on average and can't afford having something stupid happen to a hound that could have been prevented. I ask a lot from my hounds and the only way to insure performance is by hunting alone and singling out a dog and make it catch alone ..The only partner I have since spending a night out in a snowstorm, stuck in rock bluffs at a bobcat tree is the spot gps locator...

I don't hunt with other peoples hounds often. Not because I have horribly high standards. Its just not to many houndsmen want to hunt where I hunt. I did have a mongrel cow dog looking thing and a black collie X maybe lab or pit follow us around last week in mexico.
Might have been the free medical and food but they were pretty well behaved. Trashy would be a understatement but they sure showed interest in anything remotely edible.
I had to laugh the first time the hounds opened those two shot off the other way then slowly came sneaking back to see what was going on. They can sure eat a lot of cat though.

Free casting for bears in Idaho is commonplace.

Sitting at trees with a son you have raised and the dogs he has raised along with your own dogs is probably as good as it gets for me.

I hunt solo 95% of the time. I guess I am different than some I like to run my hounds with others as much as possible. I want to own the best hounds in the world regardless of breed. The only way to know that is to run your hounds with other hounds.
