Family dog

Post by bearhounder »

Probably going to just open a can of worms here but what is the best breed for being hunters as well as a family dog?... living in the house not a kennel, around kids etc,

I have had hounds of alll colors that could make a good house dog. The key is getting a dog that is laid back, not wound up competition type dog.

Hunting drive is the only issue with many hounds. If your yard is fenced it makes very little difference what breed. If however you expect to go places or let the kids walk the dog etc. Dewey is correct a cur breed typically listens better. If you have enough acreage that a few minutes inattention isn't likely to end with your dog trailing off of it or becoming road kill there's no reason a hound wouldn't work. But like stated stay away from the more amped types . these type also are more likely to develop boredom related issues.
