Training to hunt two different species
Ok so I am wondering where I hunt I have coons and cats to hunt and I like hunting both. I was wondering to have decent cat dogs could I train them to hunt coons when it is dark and cats when it is light out?
Re: Training to hunt two different species
Cats are active in the mornings and evenings and the time overlap is a problem except the areas where coons hibernate and the temperatures encourage the cats to be more active in the day. Dogs are born or gain preferred game. But coons are easier to tree. . there's a few answers to your question. You can accept whatever your dog trees. Maybe you'll be lucky and get a dog with a real preference for cats. You can run broke hounds on each species. Or you can train the hound to hunt what you approve. Its possible with the right hounds to get that taught to them and has been done in many cases. It does take more work and a better partnership with your dogs and I've never seen more then four hounds at a time that could be relied on totally not to switch game.
I will tell you it takes the right kind of dog. But most really good bobcat dogs have the ability anyway. But it also takes patience and hunting a whole lot. And most of its going to be one on one until you get that first dog to understand your choice. I don't have that much time in my dogs I hunt to many. But they will quit something for the day if called off of it. Some anyways. But you will have to hunt With this dog far more then most people do anymore. And I might be wrong but I've never seen one trained like that from a pick up or quad. Only ever foot hunters and some horseback hunters . I think its the better relationship developed.
The major drawback is the short life span of hounds. Because it really does take a long time to get a dog to switch game on your command. Most pick up subtle clues on their own as to what is to be hunted . but I sure do want to hear about your experience with trying this and the type of hounds you choose to use.

My uncle runs both down here in south Texas with the same dogs and we like to run and tree both and the dogs don't give a shit they run the first one they come to and we can tell what they are running by the way the race gose but we don't go thinking we're going to just run one or the other we just drop them and see what happens
