Do dogs that are silent on track, ever make out as rigg dogs?

bency i dont know how silent your dog is. i have a dog that is silent on cats until it's jumped, than he is wide open. on bear he is allways open,i dont rig cat but i do bear. this dog is my best rig dog for bear. i think all dogs are one of a kind, so it is hard to judge from other dogs, and what they do just because they has a few common facters. put the time in and give him a try as a rig dog. this is my 2 cents for what it is worth.

I have three dogs that are completely silent on track, and all three of them will rig, I don't know how good a rig dog they are, as I don't hunt that way much, but I know if I have them on the back of the pickup taking them to where I plan to hunt and I happen to cross fairly fresh lion or hog track they will tell me about it, so I know that at least some silent on track dogs can be taught to open on the rig.

I seen a silent yellow cur dog in Louisiana that could rig out of a boat with ease. Pull over to the bank and cut her loose with another dog and you would have a hog bayed up shortly as long as he wasnt a runner.

My old LionHeart was tight mouthed and would not open until she jumped a bear, lion, or bobcat, but she would sing from the truck when she struck a track. About half of the two litters that came from her were that way as well. I kept one female from her that went on to make one hell of a lion and bear dog. She to would rig hard from the truck but hit the ground silent. I sold that bitch to an outfitter who is still hunting her, and has told lots of people she is the best hound he's hunted around in over twenty-five years on lion.

A good tight mouthed dog is worth their weight in gold if they are smart and like the cats, but I always liked to hear the dogs hunting and it always aggravated me to hunt a silent dog.

What you described is pretty much how this hound is, but ive been trying to work him on the rigg but time well tell.

ever --- sure---
ive had 2 almost silent coonhounds that were good rig dogs-

i dont like silent trailers ,havent hunted many , but ill guarantee you some will strike from rig-


i had a pretty good silent rig dog--

she did start barking on truck when she was older-- but i used her several years before that -lol she was an open trailer -

she would yank and scratch up on that box --u couldnt miss it sometimes --

other time-- not so obvious , if i wasnt sure id turn around and road her on the ground back thru-

she was a pretty straight dog - worked better than you might think lol

if you really pay attention to dogs -- you would be surprised how many are like this -



over the years ive rigged a lot of bear with dogs that id no way call a rig dog-

got to use what u got

take them off the truck and do some investigation--and maybe some training




if im training a rig dog--and have a choice -

i want one thats easily triggered to bark----, hair trigger- -


the hard part isnt getting them to strike --

-its getting them to strike only what you want--

easier to train dogs not to do something ,than it is to train them to do something -

have you got a dog that regularly strikes bear off the leash -?

probably a very good prospect -

- if he doesnt strike on leash - good chance he wont on truck -


i never miss a chance to walk a pup over a good bear track on a leash when im hunting--

a buddy i hunted with had a good strick dog for bear but he didnt open on the box he would jump up an down on the box. he wouldnt realy open on track untill it was jumped and then he barked some.

one of my best dogs will go off on the rig on a hot track .when he hits the track he goes dead silent till he jumps the bear .if you like to hear hounds trailing he is not for you.thise can be called S.B.D. silent but DEADLY. my opinion is knowing your rig dogs.can be the key to success .my answer is defenetly a silent track dog can make a top rig dog. hope all your tracks end at the tree BIG TRACK.

I alreay have some dogs that strike bear and coon, ive been hunting this dog all season and he doesnt seem to want to strike on the rigg till all the dogs are either rolling on their chains or im cutting loose dogs.

But hes young still so im guessing time will tell.

if hes rode in the truck a season with good rig dogs , hes learned something already -




sometimes best training isnt done on the truck-- when you strike a bear ,lot of confusion for a pup , you dont have time to train at the moment

about all i can do is hold them back a little - make them bark before i let them go-

when you get a chance---work him on a leash ,alone -- encourage him to bark on a leash--

if he can locate game and bark treed-

he has the tools to rig -
getting that into is head is the hard part--

one way ive done this -after ive treed a bear -

let the bear go - i always walk pup a short ways on that track-- let him get a nose full - this is all it takes for alot of pups -

when he will goes nuts on on fresh track

ziz zag thru the woods in the direction bear went

crossing bear track occasionally - - i do this with older dogs at first

they will be striking that track farther away than u can expect pup to- so keep going ,,praise pup up if /when he strikes off leash with older dogs -
after a few times of this - sooner or later , will tree near a road lol

load older dogs back in truck and walk pup back alone -

trying to hit that fresh track-

work on striking that track off the leash -

as he gets better-- he will be winding that track a distance before you actually cross it-


- make him show you the track---

dont waste any chance you get to work pup like this on fresh track-

cornfields - orchards- your neighbor saw one---whenever- and however you can do it

, you can always do it after youve treed a bear --

when hes good on the leash


, hes ready to ride the truck-

i really dont have a lot of faith in training dogs--

i know i can train a dog , if hes a natural---


sometimes i manage to wake one up thats not lol
