North Americas most efficient Predator

Wolves hands down. I read the Monster Muley Site often. There are alot of Deer and Elk hunters on there that really blame Lions for every kill or bones they see in the field. And although we all know Lions are killing Elk and Deer. We still had a very high population in most areas in Montana of Elk and Deer with the exception of Mule Deer in many of the western areas. Montana doesnt really manage there elk and deer herds for huge trophys like Utah, New Mexico, ect with the exception of a few areas for Elk and a few for Mule Deer.
People are starting to report Wolf sightings in Utah more and more. How are they gona manage there trophy Deer and Elk with this predator clear cutting there elk and deer populations. Take a look at what the Wolves did to the populations of elk and deer in many areas of Montana.
My point is when Wolves get established in their states they will long for the days when Lions were there biggest complaint and they still had good populations of Deer and Elk. JMO dgarrett

I'm with you on the WOLF"S. You would be suprised how many deer, antelope, elk & moose are killed by cars & trains. Talk to any railroader that runs thur Wyoming. It will make you sick. A few years ago in Idaho. West of Am. Falls a train killed 60 antelope. There were beded on the tracks. I drive a 60 mile streck everyday sometime there are 6 or 7 deer a day hit by cars. I get sick of hearing lion kill a deer a week B.S. Mark

Wolves may very well be the most destructive, but I am of the opinion that lions are probably more efficient.

Only man has the ablility to take or walk away from a potential kill--and he also has the ability to wipe out or save a complete species..............

Lions kill approx one animal every 7-10 days. On a lion study I was on back in the 80's, we had 8 lions collared. Over a two year period, they averaged one kill every 8-9 days. The average was somewhat higher then normal because of one TOM that killed something almost every day. He only ate the liver and then killed again almost immediately.
Now go and find some info on auto/deer kills. You'll find that in some states, almost three times as many deer are killed by autos then hunters each year.

Although this is old news the northern yellowstone herd of 19,000 elk had been reduced to less then 9000 elk in less ythen 10 yrs of wolf reintroduction. This herd had to endure all the other predators (grizzly and black bears, lions, coyotes and traffic ect) plus allowed for hunting and a permit system that allowed for up to 1200 elk to be taken by hunters annually. This herd sustained its population till wolf reintroduction then fell dramatically. No other predator had such an effect on wildlife populations. Even with cars and railroads all the predators and hunting. Montana has had good populations of elk and whitetail deer. Mule deer have been in a decline in some areas but for the most part record high populations have occured in almost all areas for elk till wolves get a real foothold. The F and G extended elk season in many areas this year. In all but the areas that wolves have dropped the population of elk. My point is how is a state like Utah that manages there elk and deer in many areas for trophys and once in a lifetime draw tags going to regulate these hunting areas when wolves move into this state. I would say a greedy and determined women might rate right up there near the top. LOL! JMO Kidding Ok?

Wolves usually take a pack, cats miss rather often and go hungry, fox not bad but limited menu. El Coyote however does his own thing so well that he seldom goes hungry and if no rabbits, rats, or such is about he is not above eating what Big Harlan rancher Jim's oldest son threw up on the way home Saturday night after eating 3 big Macs and downing a 12 pack of Keystone and a half pint of Seagram's 7. LOL!

I would whole heartedly agree with Mr. Leonard. If you are talking about strictly the most EFFICIENT predator there is no question. Mr. Yote wins hands down. You don't see many wolves or lions that can adapt to living in downtown New York City.

The most effecient predator is the house cat, its prey menu was last calculated at over a 1000 different species
