I think 'bout anybody thats ever chased bobbers, has tried to smoke one out of a hole one time or another. Had one go into a big rock slide one time. Made a big fire in the hole, threw a bunch of green branches on then buried the whole thing in snow. Had that whole rock slide smokin, never did get anything to come out. Not sure I'd a seen it come out anyway! :D

They don't like to stay in a hole with a road flare in there with 'em.

I have asked the same question to many of cat hunters and was always told the cat will stay in and die before coming out even heard of one guy setting one on fire what a waste I hate running into holes unless you can see the cat its frustrating for sure but i would rather run another day than taking a chance of wasting a cat I might try posting some one at the ledges before starting your dog on the track if you are running the same cats to the same holes and you know where they are apt to end up might work I would try that just my opinion If there was a sure fire method of getting cats out of hole every cat hunter the state would be carrying it and theyre would be alot less cats I aways figured if the cat get to a hole it wins on that day but still there to run another day best of luck Larry

If you don't see the cat come out you killed it. Posting topics like this is not good for our image as houndsmen. Smoke in a hole was a way the ranchers in this country used to control wolf populations. If you feel this needs discussing put it in the members only .

well im sorry hillbilly i didnt know it was that big of an issue. i would not do it if i knew that it would kill a cat and thats why i made the post. now that i know i would not try it anyways. larry the cats randy , travis and i are running are already laid up in the ledges before we even start running them damn things. you are right. it gets real frustrtating for sure. one time we started one before it got light out and he jumped the cat and it went around the ledges and he ran it for awhile before it went into some different ledges. thats cat hunting for ya. saw your picture. congrats on the cat.

He beat you and leave them to run another day as not all critters need harvesting.

Just my two cents

I had a couple terriers that I would stuff in the hole with them. It was fun to watch them tag team the cat till he was worn down. Then believe it or not they would drag him out. They seem to just give up once they are worn out.

I leave them now.....A cat that never trees never dies and lives to be a great seed cat.

It was a lot more fun to get the heck outta there and go find another track, than mess with it.

You can smoke one out,but many parts of the country have too many labrynths for it to work. I feel you should leave the cat that trees and try to terminate the cat that puts a dog in danger. I know of a few dogs that have died going into underground washes. I also know of a particular cat that ledges up on a cliff above a swift river with tall rock walls. My friend had to repel down the cliff and lasso his dogs to save them last week. The only place he could see the cat from was the side of the cliff while dangling eighty feet above the river. That kind of a cat is a candidate for removal in my eyes.

it seems to me that every one here has an opinion and well i think that after reading this topic there is a few good pieces of information concerning the topic and a lot of opinion or finger pointing about what is not said but perceived and well my take is this so far the cats that have been run into these whole have cost robbyson money as his dog was quilled heavily and also was close to being trapped inside with no way to retrieve so here is the delema not the killing but the opprtunity to figure a way to possbly change the cats ending destination to be run more and more and more is what the questions motive was as one might hope to adjust the cats behavior in the future by making it choose a different destination when chased again and to possibly help the very driven dog to perhaps run the cat again, is what i see the question leading up to. that is my opinion i welcome yours, and yes larry your advice was right on and well we have tried the being there before but have found them to already be there or well to just popp into another spot when they see us there. so the thought of smoking them out was a question seeking advice on how and if this is possible.

I can honestly say I have never considered educating a cat a positive thing. Some pop up some hole up and some have to be caught on the ground. I'm more into training dogs than cats, but i don't have a problem graduating some bobcats to a higher plane of conciousness, if you knop what I mean.
