Porcupine problems!?

Post by MadCatter »

Asking for advice on dogs and porcupines. Can you break them off porcupines? I've had several dogs over the years that just couldn't leave them alone! You would think they would learn after a time or two. I've had hog dogs, coon dogs, and cat dogs all go for the spiny little s@#&$!. Treed one while looking for coon this year and had to kick one dogs butt to leave it. Yesterday we were trying a fairly fresh cat track on dry ground and couldn't seem to move it, when they dumb assed into a porcupine. Unfortunately this time, they caught it on the ground! I was within 50 yards of them and got there quick. I shocked the snot out of the older dog and she finaly left it. But it was too late and we spent the next hour pulling quills out of two dogs. How about you guys... any advice?

We've been having some troubles ourselves here but any time that we see a porcupine trail or den we put the shock collar on and lead them up to it and see if they try it and if they do, well you know and if they don't they get a "GOOD DAAWG" and load back into the truck.

In the summer I try and catch one with a fish net and drop it in a roll cage. I go out before roading the dogs and put it where I'll be roading them through, if any takers I give em the juice. Don't take to many times and they will tuck there tail and run past it looking over their shoulder with a O Sh-t look on their face.
Course I had a dog get in one this spring that's been through the treatment.

Thanks Budd and Racin. I'll give those a try. I guess we are the only three who's dogs end up in a porcupine. LOL

ive seen more porcupine dens this year than any other. my blueticks been in them twice. same one racin gt is talking about. but what he said seems to be working but only time will tell. enough shock therapy and i think they will stay away from anything. another method is some major porcupine slaying this spring and fall. hunt them year round here in maine.

me tooo :D

broke is a strong word-- i like to say theyre bent :D

with snow-- its easy to find porcupine-

got ledges rockpiles , ?

, see cuttings/ porcupine crap under a hemlock--- look up-

they cut the limbs off and climb down to eat them -

watch for porky trails -or fresh stripped trees
- you cant miss it :)
they move like a snail ------they are not far from where you saw his trail
soon as grass starts greening up- look in hayfields at dusk or dawn-

best way ive found to break them ,is to shock them on several fresh TRACKs over a period of time --

a little zap on that big porky trail doesnt hurt a thing either

- dont want to scare the wheels off them-- , just make em a little cautios :)
deep snow ,
bobcats like to walk on those porky trails -and eat porcupine when they are desperate-

they walk deer trails in same way -

got to be broke---but not overbroke either - makes it hard -

id rather shock them on a track ,that i know they can smell ,then on a porcupine -

this is same with anything im trying to break them off -

set it up and bump em with collar as soon as they wag their tail ,or show any interest .
i like to hit them with less juice before they are super excited --- i plan on doing this several times - not all in one day - :) ive bent some world champion porky dogs like that - :D the porky in a roll cage deal like budd said cant hurt--its a good start .

but

- ive been very succesful breaking dogs off one animal

he will cry if he ever smells that one animal again--

-- -- its easy to make him very afraid of ONE -

i want him to ignore ALL OF THEM -

doing it several times ,on different animals of same species, has worked better for me-

if you get a dog really broke off one particular animal --

and try to do it again---- he will show you just how far away he can actually -- smell it - :D

We've got plenty of porky's where I hunt but I've never really considered them a problem. I don't worry about training my pups not to chase them because I know that its only a matter of time and they will train themselves. Ha! Every pup I've ever owned has gotten into a porcupine at one time or another and usually thats all it takes. The best thing to do is get out the ol pliars and start yanking and make it as miserable as you possibly can. I've never had a dog get quilled more than once. Ross
