Since you are cross posting same topic in various areas, I'll do the same:

There is no way to to tell what kind of hunter the dog will be without hunting him.

It's admirable you considering taking this dog. He is heart breaking and truly I'd like to stomp a new arsehole in slime that treat dogs the way they are making it sound the former owner treated them. My opinion had changed to pretty much thinking these type dogs should just be culled at the shelters. Their breeders, too.

Oh, I don't much care for shelters or the problems they perpetuate and the guilt they sow...that could affect my opinion.

How are you going to believe it comes from any kind of real hunting line if the owner was a sbad as the shelter makes it sound?

How would you believe a shelter is going to much give you true or accurate advice? They are looking to 'save' these dogs and will say about anything.

Go to a reputable breeder.

Or take this one and give him a good home. Maybe he'll please you and maybe he won't. Then what will you do? Care for him anyway? Take him out and leave him in the woods to die a slow death (anyone who does this should die slowly and painfully themselves)? Take him out and shoot him? Sell him to some other newb or idiot after he looks better?

Good luck.

I paided 250 buck for my first cull. She was three and had never been off the chain. Best damn cat dog I ever owned. I would take a dozen blue dog just like her and pay ya double. I may have gotten lucky and I hope you did to. I have seen several dogs come out of shelters and become great dogs.

Spend some time earning his trust first. Don't worry about what he will do on game for now. After a few days of just hanging out with him start making loud noises before, during and after you feed him. That's how I would start out.

Good Luck.....And Wishes to You and Your New Dog.

Good luck with your new dog.

I have a pack of dogs that some would call culls just due to the fact I didnt pay an arm and a leg for them. Some I even got for free. They are not the best in the woods by any means but there are mine they put game up and make me very happy so yes it can be done.

bucknaze, dont be fooled, you cant make every dog a hunting dog!there are so many flaws a dog can have that can cause him to be ineffective that it would take me an hour to type them all.you can follow these dogs through the woods for years and not catch the game you could catch in a week with a good hound.read the post on why people cull dogs.not saying yours wont be a good dog but its a proven fact that all dogs dont make decent hunters

And I would also have to agree with oswald for the 5 dogs I got right now. I had 15 others or more that wouldnt hunt. Or were so bad at it I couldnt fix what they needed to be fix to meet my standards even as low as mine are:)

I agree that most dogs will hunt, they are basicly domisticated wolves after all  Whats more important is will they hunt for you, the person thats feeding them? Nice looking hound, if looks count he shoud be a good one!

I have a pack of free dogs that do well for me. They would not suit most because they are not pure hound, most don't even have hound in them. They trail mostly silent and don't bark much on a tree, but this year 2009 they have treed 6 bobcats 16 grey foxes and several possums and ringtailed cats, no skunks yet this year but that might be because they killed them all last year

dont let people get ya down
i have two champion bred beagles, paid a pretty penny for em too
one will not hunt at all, he's meaner than hell but i still keep him around
the others decent and we started my buddies english pup on rabbits with him lol

what i'm sayin is, just cuz a paper says it'll hunt, or you payed alot, dont mean it will..i mean look at tom jr's post, those are free dogs that arent hounds, that still from what i've read consistantly catch game
hank taught me just how to stay alive, you'll never catch out the house without my 9 or .45. i got a big orange tractor and a diesel truck and my idea of heavens chasin whitetail bucks...
