looking for trouble?

Post by beaglewalkerhunter4 »

I have had some coyote in my area that are killing alot of peoples cats. I have a beagle walker mix who is about 2, and good size about 50 lbs. My question is would It be possible to hunt coyotes with her? (just solo her.) she chased one when we were coon hunting last saturday and i pulled her off because i didnt know what to excpect. could you guys give me some background on how they run? a cross country tour, a circle or what? also im afraid if it came down to it i dont know if she could hold her own against a big yote. what do you guys think is it realistic?

Thanks in advance, Jon McMillan.

i cant answer that either - :)
hows she do on a big coon?

we first started hunting coyotes here 25-30 years ago
-used foxhounds- bred to chase fox-

some of them would run till they caught up to the coyote - and quit as soon as coyote wanted to fight back-

i had two decent foxhounds that got the wheels scared right off them-they wouldnt hardly run fox after- they were severely traumatized :D
coyotes had never been run with hounds ,many would stop and fight- some foxhounds didnt have enuff fight in them ,even tho they may be the same breed as coyote dogs

finally got some dogs with a little grit - seemed easier after that- i think it was a combination of coyotes learning to fear hounds and better dogs -
i wouldnt have a big problem running coyotes with one dog
but id rather start a pup with a dog that wasnt afraid-
if your dog can handle a rough coon ,it may not be an issue-

the yote will run so far and others will join in and the will kill a single dog.
we run them with a pack of Julys or Walkers and a Browning 243. the old yotes will some times stop to fight but that is his last mistake.

Pete, on a rough coon she will fight hard but, at first she doesnt fight as hard. And about the yotes ganging up on the dog, thats what i'm afraid of...

if you've got a dog that can keep up with your hound that has a little grit to it that would help gettin mixed up with more than she could handle...dosent have to be a hound. just a fast dog that will fight
thats my opinion at least, dont need hounds to run coyotes..out here at least
hank taught me just how to stay alive, you'll never catch out the house without my 9 or .45. i got a big orange tractor and a diesel truck and my idea of heavens chasin whitetail bucks...
