Whats best for a split tail???

My male gets a little wound in the box and while tied up. He has beat the end of his tail bloody more then once now. I have given him a week or so off to heal then he'll do it again, it dosn't seem to bother him at all he still goes for broke it's just a mess and looks bad. I am now trying to keep it coated in vasaline to help it. I am not a fan of docking, so does any body have a better way to get it healed up?? Is this a common problem?

my catchdog gets happytail whenever we hunt. beats it bloody in the box. i super glue the tip of his tail and seems to do better
