Re: bear baits
i live in maine and have been bear hunting for 14 years over bait and i must say nothing beats a pile of rotten sea fish or salt water fish and also donuts also they have incredible noses and will travel miles for what they smell. some things to think about is placement of bait, I. E. which way the predominent wind blows and also having your bait set up so as to draw the animal to your bait from his lair. he needs to be comfortable with the route travelled to your site. i also use an unsolitified grease like you can get from many small bakeries or resturaunts which they frie food in as it is tracked by all little creatures like rabbits squirels racoons and yes even coyotes and when a bear crosses the scent in a raspberry patch they follow it back to the bait site and well once found they always know where this site is. hope this gives you some ideas and some success. Re: bear baits
Randy : We bait around Brownville Me. Started adding Fish heads to our bait pile 5 or 6 years ago . They really work as long as you do not stand down wind after 3 or 4 days
We tend to use a lot of Blue and codfish heads . Some fresh water species ,I would have to say they each get eaten in = amounts .I just keep loading up 5 gallon plastic pails stuff in freezer til ready to start baiting
