NEED HELP WITH DRUMS??

Post by cklspencer »

Im still kind of new to the bear hunting thing but got a great taste of it in Idaho this year. I did not end up with a bear but am already working on next years bear hunt. The problem I'm having is finding 15-25 gallon metal drums. I don't want to use 55 gallon ones because they are to big and heavy to carrie in a half mile. I've been looking on line and can find new ones but they want way more then I'm willing to pay. I was hoping maybe some of you might have some info on were I can find them here in Utah.
Thanks for the help!!!

Hey I use the drums that the grease comes in at your local lube shops. They are like a 15 or 20 gallon drum. They have a plastic liner that you can just pull out so that they aren't dirty at all. They work great.

I would read Pg. 19 of the Utah proclamation before using any barrels at your bait station. That is if you are planning to hunt here in utah.

Hey BWTB, I would re-read the first post on this page.

cklspencer, how many do you want? I have a couple 30 gal. metal barrels you can have. What part of Idaho are you from, and where did you hunt?

I'm not sure what I missed on the first post, but if you are hunting in Idaho maybe cutting 55s in half would be an option

I'm not from Idaho. I'm from Utah. Hunted around Fairfield. The reason Im looking for smaller drums is I want to pack in a ways and a larger drum is just two much. If I can find some of the smaller ones I can put straps on like a pack. It just seamed like there were alot of baits close to roads. I knew there was a few and I thought there might be a few more but on the last day of the hunt when everyone showed up to pack them out I could not belive how many there were. I did alot of hiking around and found some great areas with bear track and bear sign around so I know I would have no problem getting one on some bait with a little work. Ive been checking with my local lube shops but its not like they go through grease really fast. 15 and 20 gal drums would be perfect for what I plan on doing.

Fairfield doesn't have many bears. I hunt elk there, where did you spend time?

Sorry catch. We turn off the road about 30 min. from fairfield and still had to drive about 45 min. to an hour I won't give the exact area. I was shown by someone else. And I don't know if they would like me giving info like that out. There were about 6-8 bears taken in the area we were in. I do know there were many baits that were not touched. I do know not far from the area we hunted there is another area that has many bears and not as much pressure But we did not find that out until the last day of the hunt.

Just a thought, but a predator call is a lot lighter.
