Color Predictions

Post by newby »

Hey...just wondering if anyone has any helpful advice on how to predict what percentage of pups will be what color when breeding grade dogs? I know I've seen articles by people like Grey Fox discussing this matter within the Leopard Cur breed, but if you know the colors of a few generations of both parents breeding, would it be possible to predict the colors of pups in a litter? What are your thougts? Any books/resources you'd recommend?

depends on if these grade dogs are a genetically pure strain just not registered. if they are more homozygous then not, then the chances of predicting color goes out the window completely. more importantly so does hunting ability, style, and reason for breeding them anyway. example i have two "walker " dogs that are marked similar and are from a family of dogs but from experience i can tell you when bred together your likely to get every color imaginable although the pups will all have the same hunt characteristics

So is it your opinion that one wouldn't be able to predict color even if both dogs come from long lines of color uniformity? To make things more muddy, both dogs in this hypothetical breeding are not uniform color for either of their families. For instance, the female is a Plott, but she's a reddish buckskin and the male's family typically turns out red, but he turned out Black and Tan. My suspicion is that there will be some red, some brindle, and some black with brindle trim, but I think it probably is a crap shoot...just curious if anyone thought there was any hope of predicting color.

Trying to predict the colors of mixed colored dogs is like trying to predict the amount of pups you will have and their genders.... All you can do is hope for the best and be happy to get what you get.

no i said if the family's are tightly bred with a GENITIC disposition towards a color scheme. you maybe will be able to guess in a general way but to say they will look exactly like this or that will probably only be a fun way to pass time till they are born. the less attention given color the more variation in color. but the more information you have about a family the more accurate your guesses should be.
