Hi all,
I'm completely new to all of this and have a burning desire to learn more. I have already read a few books and watched the regular videos. I'd like to get started as soon as possible...but on the other hand, don't want to start out on the wrong foot.
Bottom line....I need a mentor/friend who knows what they're doing.
I did go to a meet last year and hung around for awhile. I attempted to ask a few questions..but beings that I didn't have a dog with me or a leash in hand, I kinda felt like I was the plague. Just never got anyone to warm up to me.
What's your guys' best suggestion for meeting someone who knows their stuff but at the same time trying not to offend or make them feel that threatened? (As in taking their hunting ground)
I'm open for any ideas.
Thanks guys,
Jerry

Re: Best way to get in good with a veteran
Dont be scared to talk to a more experienced houndsman up there, but be humble and be all ears. Alot of times there are a few older gentleman just hoping for some young guy to come along and help them wrangle dogs and walk into a long tree, but they dont want some kid telling them how to hunt. Most guys are really good if they can tell that you are serious and that you can listen. Find a guy with some good dogs and go talk to him and be willing to pay your own way (give gas money, or offer to take your vehicle) and buy a dog from him if he'll let you. Be willing to go the extra mile. If they can see that you are serious and you want it most will bend over backwards to help you.
