Bear season open in NM.

Post by ken »

Well this sunday opens the bear season in NM.. of course my hounds are to young but ill hunt anyway :D question what do you all think about taking my 6 month old B.T along for the walk.. would it be beneficial for him? Should I let him lead? He hasnt rigged to my knowledge and he has been trained on Cat scent.. Could he still help?

If there are older dogs let him go. I wouldn't let him go by himself. Or if you have the critter treed let him go to the tree. I think that it is always better to have them in the woods than not to. I wouldn't think that you need to lead him in there either. I like to see what they do on there own, kind of seeing what there natural abilities are.

Ken take him along and put him on all the bear tracks you can find, the more the better.

I usually like to road those young hounds with the older ones and when they get big enough to keep up and develop some stamina turn them in the run. I'm working one right now that is eight months old, and started her during the summer training season back in July. She has made every tree and is starting to rig bear hard with the big dogs from the box, and is ready to put on top now. Good luck!

If you know you are turning loose on a particularly mean bear I would hold on to him. Otherwise by all means turn him loose.

thank you for all the replies, question. Say we get on some sign and we run out of time.... is it ok to pull him off..? how would he relate to that? I plan on keeping him on a lead, I have no tracking collar....Sorry if the questions are dumb.. just beginning in hounds an Iam scared to death of ruining him..

I truely appreciate all your support.. THANK YOU!

you cant keep him on the chain the whole time, the only way hes gonna learn is to let him go, but it would really help is you can find someone that will let you hunt with them that has older hounds.
