Start 'em early!

Post by Redwood Coonhounds »

Here's my newest addition, Gamble, with his best friend in the world, my barncat Timmy.

Timmy is a little "slow" (litterally, he has mental problems) and every dog is his best friend (though he has so far stayed away from the big dogs.) This is the first time he's had a hound dog for a freind though. He LOVES them ears!

Gamble loves mauling him. I can see a lot of natural talent already! He doesn't really bark much as he usually has a mouth full of fur. I can tell he's playing but on a few occasions I'll see "nature" kick in and he'll start gut grabbing a little hard, or if Timmy runs, the chase is on. He can find this cat ANYWHERE. I let him out the door, and he runs nose to the ground, or winds until he finds him!

No kittens were hurt, and the pup is expected to make a full recovery!

Haha thats awesome. I guess I went the total opposite route of you, never letting my dogs see any of my housecats (and I have to bring them through my house all the time to bring them to the truck, no gate), guess I thought it might ruin them in the long run, but I have never had anyone tell me different. It seems that your dogs seem to do pretty good, if they have all seen housecats at a young age like this. Guess my next pup I may try it! Good pics

Thats pretty cool to see those pups getting on those cats. How old do you let them get when you start to not let them see the cats? Or do you even let them when they are adults and they can distinguish between the housecats and a bobcat or cougar?

Buck, My older hounds can tell the difference between my barn cats and ferrel cats. My newer female hound wasn't raised with the cats and one of the barn cats almost committed suicide the other day!

I would think that if I raised my pups around my housecats that they would be able to tell the difference but with my older dogs they definetly dont care. Had a scare this last week and my favorite cat (hate all other cats besides the 4 I got for some reason and will NEVER get another cat) almost got killed by my main female. My cat was holding his own on top of the couch scratching away, haha

Well those two ended up being my pups but the pics were sent to me as they were growing up, so they're not 'my" cats.
However, since then they are all dead I've been told and of the 4 he had at one time they've all gone "that way", recently got 2 more and there is just 1 of those left now.
I guess every time one gets out or decides to make a run for it when being unloaded/loaded from the kennels, they head straight for the porch where the cats always are/were. The ones that live usually make it into the engine compartment of the truck but I hear its a real bitch replacing brake lines and wiring after the dogs get under there
Guess these dogs see all cats as an unfinished job and none are "ok."

I tell you what, a cat would not last .5 of a milisecond anywhere near my grown hounds. I've never had cats until recently. And haven't really cared about my dogs getting ahld of them.

This is the only dog I've really introduced to them. The housecats HATE dogs, and stay in the house. Timmy isn't all there, and can't stay in the house, though he is probably the coolest. Adn for being a little slow, has figured out to stay away from the big dogs. Though he usually goes about 6inches from the front porch MAX, and the big dogs are not allowed in the front of the house.

Sheimer - he's from Casey Cardwell. My other cat could be a twin to yours!
