Raw Pork for Dog Food?

Post by R.M. »

The neighbors were cleaning out their freezer and going to throw away a bunch of old pork (lions, chops, etc.). Can I feed pork to the hounds raw, or should I boil or bbq it before I give it to the dogs?

Thanks for any info.

When I kill a hog I give the hogs heart and liver to the dogs imeadiately after the kill as a reward. Also I will give them blood shot meat when im skinning and butchering the hog out. At home I give the tails, ears and legs below the knee all raw to the dogs to chew on. If the meat has been frozen and too outdated for me too eat I will cook it before I feed it to my dogs. I havent ever had any problems to my recolection.

I've fed lots of pork. Dogs do very well on it. Raw is the only way to feed meat. Don't see many wolves or coyotes cooking up meat do you :D

Mason Houghland, an old fox hunter wrote a book called Gone Away. He claimed that pork was the best kind of meat to feed your dogs.

I might argue that pocket gophers are high on the list. I live in sugar sand country and I trap the h**l out of them things. Always have a dog or two along when I check my traps. They eat them gophers like they're candy. The hounds that get to check traps with me always stay nice and slick and have a good shiney coat compared to the ones that have to get by on that expensive dog food.

When it gets real cold here, like down in the -40 degree range, I like to go to my hog farmer friend and get a pig that has been culled and is frozen to feed to my dogs. I will use a chainsaw and cut it into about 5-6 pieces and feed it to them. The dogs will put on weight even when it is that cold when they have a piece of hog to eat. If you try this, make sure that the hog is fully frozen before taking the chainsaw to it!
A good dog hunts wherever he's set down.

biggest issue with pork is worms, if you worm regularly it should not be a problem but you have to be 100% consisitent for example if you worm the first of every month you need to worm the first of every month not the second one month and then back to the first. The inconsistency in worming will help the parasited develop resistence to the agent used to get rid of them, this is why the doctor tells you to finish all of your antibiotics and not stop once you feel better.

I agree raw is best but, whenever someone has ground meat pork or anything I will fry a large amount so that I can feed it to them quickly. I just fry up enough to last a week and put it in the fridge and then when it's gone I will thaw enough to do it again. Your feed bill will cut way back while feeding it and I even had to cut back because my dogs were getting fat even in hunting season. It will deff. give them a nice coat.
