Re: First tree dogs. Advice?

I wouldn't blame someone at all for not wanting the headache of helping a person with virtually no experience with tree dogs. I really enjoy taking new turkey or big game hunters out but the person has to really want to go for me to take them. All the time people ask me to take them hunting, or even ...

First tree dogs. Advice?

I finally have my first treeing type dogs. Two leopard curs more specifically. A male and a female 8 weeks old.

I don't personally know anyone in my area that runs hounds or curs so no adult dogs to help train. I do hope to meet some folks though.

What's your best advice you wish you had when ...

Littermate syndrome in hounds

It’s common in the bird dog world for people to talk about how important it is if you keep more than one dog from a litter (or same age cohort) to separate them for the majority of puppyhood or they will get to attached to each other and not the handler.

Ultimately the dogs don’t hunt very well. I ...

Re: How do ya’ll keep so many dogs

Holy smokes 22 hounds. This clearly is no flippant hobby for you. My wife might help me out a week or weekend here and there with a couple dogs but she wouldn’t ever go for that. My boys to young still to be of much help.

It’s interesting because most people grew up with a family dog, maybe two ...

Re: How do ya’ll keep so many dogs

Bowieknife- that’s a good response for my wife no doubt. That’s one of my biggest concerns is not being able to devote enough time to each dog. I’ve had good dogs in the past and I think they only turned out the way they were because I’d spend every moment with them.

Beebout - that’s another good ...

Re: How do ya’ll keep so many dogs

Beebout- 10 dogs is quite the pack. Great points.

Keep in mind I’ve never owned hound breeds. Still working on acquiring my own. Though I’ve had various other types of dogs. Every hound I’ve ever really got to know has been a very well behaved dog, I’d say even more so than an average house dog ...

How do ya’ll keep so many dogs

I see and hear about you all who have 6, 12, 20+ dogs and just have to wonder how you keep all of them? Pictures would be welcome of setups, etc.

Lots of talk about how many dogs are best to run whatever animal… but how many dogs before you say I have enough dogs and can’t handle them anymore? Not ...

Re: Another new member from CA

Thanks everyone for the reply’s. I was hunting elk the last week and a half, hence the late response.

I’ll definitely be checking the Facebook sites out. I don’t go on Facebook much, almost deleted it a time or two but it comes in handy for looking at dogs.

I’d love to go to some field trials ...

Re: Another new member from CA

I’m in the Central Sierra Foothills. Southeast of Sacramento about an hour.

I’m starting to realize there is still a small stronghold of houndsmen in CA.

There’s got to be a decent breeder closer than Missouri. Not that distance is a huge concern because we have airplanes but I don’t want to ...

Another new member from CA

Howdy all,

I’m new to hounds. I’ve been threatening to get hounds or curs for a while now but was waiting until I moved away from this state because my real interest is in bear and cats.

When we used to be able to run bears with dogs it was a great atmosphere. I never personally had any hounds ...
