I had a 16 year old ask me what was needed to hunt a hound a week or too ago. And how to do it?
My response was. A strong leash you can wear like a sash. And a good pair of work boots. Then I said just chase that dog everywhere! If you have what it takes, that dog just mite make a hound hunter out ...

Re: Cats will swim
About 2 seasons ago I snuck down into a well respected houndsmans ground. I just intended to pass thru on my way to bigger country. But its hard to pass on one you see run across the road. Especially when your training 1-2 year old dogs. Long story short. That cat took us across the river twice in ...

Re: when going hunting what is the most important
So! Where is the dog and who"s training on it rite now? Your a busy man J.c. Work, family, dogs. Your constantly running. But Brad has got to slow down just a little, giving him more time to think! And, I am willing to bet. It all worked out just like he wanted it too. John.

Re: you dirt hunters, a question
Dewey is right about dry training. But be mindful some dogs just arnt mature enough to deal with those conditions be it age, breeding or training. Many good hunters have been into summer cat trees only to see a yearling doe caught. Lol. Dogs can get frustrated and lie to you. Know your dogs and be ...

Good honest cat hunt. Says a lot for a man that can admit he has been beat a few times. Thanks for sharing. John.

Re: world championship catdog competion
Shit head Sunny, Must of rattled that cat pretty good to make him take refuge in that tree. That cat is no stranger to a pack of dogs. How could 1 dog do that?
The perfect jump! Sunny was on him like stink on shit. That cat couldn't believe only 1 dog was there, kept looking over his shoulder for ...

Re: Define "Brains" in a Hound?
So when is enough brains, enough. We breed for cat minded dogs. They are smart, and a good 1 suprise's you with being at the right place's at the right time from an early age.

Re: Big problem pups fighting to death?
Get yourself a cattle prod. When the young dogs dont respect your commands, make believers out of them.
Once they get the idea, keep the prod with you so they can see it. ONLY USE THE PROD FOR FIGHTING PROBLEMS.
I cant spell philosphy? But I can spell, cattle prod.
. John.

Re: Silent when cold trailing - desirable or not?
When running more open hounds, I have found feeder tracks during really good scenting conditions that sounded like a damn good cat race. The problem was we never really moved a cat or even pressured him. The open dogs would hold my casting dogs in tighter, never letting them cast out to find the cat ...

Re: POTLICKERS
Hi Andy, I look at things a little differently than most probably do. I know there are treeing walkers and running walkers, and those carry certain traits. With that said, a hunter that is lucky enough to raise entire litters of pups realise's pretty quick that not all pups are created equal. To me ...

I also thought all hounds could be refered to as potlickers? You learn something new every day.
Al, I believe this cross I have out back could be taken either direction in a handful of breedings if a guy was motivated to do so. But for where we live a treeing/running balance is needed. Much like ...
