Hi,
I am working with a black and tan coonhound pup right now. Going to start working him on hogs, just the same i have the constant fear he will start barking on trail.
I am going to be running him with silent dogs, but in the event he starts to open up even a little bit how I can stop it right ...

They are excellent strike dogs. They have good noses and can wind very well a well as pick up a hot-medium track.

Re: will it make a good strike dog?
It will not come natural you have to train him
When he is young, 4-6 months old show him a small hog with older dogs, get him into it. Start uping the size of the hogs bit by bit and their rankness with less help.
Then, at around 10-12 months old take him to the woods with more experienced dogs, he ...

Re: Gritty Cur Dog, HELP
Vest him up for one.
Second, you can't have one gritty dog in a pack, cause then they are the only ones getting their asses kicked left and right.
If you have more than one gritty dog, they all gang up and no one dog can really take a beating. I don't really have to run a bulldog anymore cause ...

Re: positive hog sign?
Those look like hog tracks alright. Not sure about the feces.
But if there is feces of any kind and hog tracks normally there are hogs. lol.
I would honestly look for one big thing. ROOTING.
There is no other clear sign that says that hogs are in the area but rooting. If there is none ...

Well if your finding one you are finding one thats for sure!

Re: Male or female
If you ask me there are pros and cons to both.
Males:
Pros: Tend to be bigger, stronger. You could say tend to be a bit more aggressive.
Cons: Fighting, always in heat, always horny and walking around pissing on stuff.
Female:
Pros: Have pups, they tend to spend less time looking for stuff to ...

Re: Vests and cut collars
Probably too late but I will put in my opinion anyway.
I have run just about everything.
The top companies I found are Ugly Dog, Hog Wire, Hardcore Hog dogs, and swamp dawg.
Honestly Hog Wire is the best stuff I ever run.
It has never been cut through, light weight, does not absorb water, looks nice ...

Re: Hog Hounds?
Hounds have their place. But honestly I am not the biggest fan of a PURE hound.
You might say they have too cold of a nose, as in hogs move around alot and if you end up picking up to cold of a track you may be trailing into the next county. lol.
Some of them dont necessarily have alot of grit to ...

I have seen them PLENTY of times used on bear, lion, and even retrieving. thats common for me
I have seen them in texas used on hogs but not nearly as much as curs, hounds, bulldogs.

That used to be a problem with the older, primitive vest. I have close to never had that problem. ever

Re: neck protection for sloppy coon dog
Lol,
well considering a coon a hog are two different things, I will point you in both directions
The best hog dog gear I have ever run is Hog Wire Cut gear, and if that "Coon" bites through that, hes not a coon but more likely something alot worse.
Any old cut collar from anyone if fine though ...
