At the end of the day the DC30s have never really FAILED me so them dropping the ball again doesnt change much. They need to LISTEN to what WE want.
Evidently they won't though.
I was certain they would come through a bit better than this.
I have NO qualms with forking out the dough to switch to a better unit the second one becomes available.

Like I always say, people have TWO ears and ONE mouth for a reason... Garmin... knock knock...

Maybe they're more concerned about their ritzey gps units in the the beamers and mercedes, after all how fancy does the 'bling' for these flea bit mongrels need to get

The official press release came from Garmin today at 1:20pm. A preliminary release came at 10:04 am.

There have been some minor changes. Nothing that is going to make me wait to buy another. In fact if anything will hope to see some close out pricing!! RIGHT NOW THEY ARE NOT AVAILABLE!!!!!! Only a press release stating the upcoming event. Expected ship date of the first ones are not until AUGUST!!!! Here a statement Garmin on the matter.

Ok, Here is my last post on this before the weekend..(and I put the Prototype photos up just for fun.. Ugly SOB's aren't they.)


I'm getting allot of questions about the DC30 compared to the DC40.

Currently my recomendation is if you were holding off for a DC40.. Let's hold off for at least another week until the dust settles and I can start to get some Solid information on actual dealer costs and availibility and I can ask some questions, As Steve stated, Looks like Dealer cost will be close to the same, they don't like answering quetions before it's official.

It "may" appear that only the MSRP cost has gone up, and Dealer cost will be close to the same. Everything I have seen had only showed MSRP so I had to assume Garmin was raising their entire price scheme. (You know what they say about assumptions...) , However this may have been pushed by the big dealers retail stores wanting more Margin. I have to compete with the Lowlife Website stores for you cheap bastards.. So I don't enjoy those high Margins..

I'll let you know what my decision is, since I too was holding out on buying a couple collars to see what the DC40 will be. I'll give you all the best information I can so you can make an informed decision for yourself.

Close out pricing would be nice, but I don't think that's in the cards, Garmin normally doesn't close out with Outdoor products, Appears that there is No rebate this go around either.. Possibly some Refurbished DC30 collars but that's all speculation right now.

I want your bussiness, but I want it honestly. More info to come later.

Now it seem that Garmin has come out with a (new) collar that doesn't have much improvement, it's time for Garmin to really get their sh-t together and improve the receiver by adding about 50-70 more communication numbers so people won't keep interfering with each other !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've been in touch with the guy heading up the field testing, and as of a week ago, he hasnt even received the unit for testing, before production, if that helps. It sounds like you will be lucky to even see one this year. LOL

Something that most folks do not understand is very simple. If Garmin adds more channels you are going to most likely have to pay more. The 5 channels that they currently use are free of any licensing requirements. Each channel is limited in it's deviation which is 10-20khz. They could make a claim like Tinyloc for thousands of channels using these channels, but in reality it would be a nightmare. Say for instance the channel is 154.605 =/- 10khz That means can legally operate 154.595 to 154.615. Not a lot of room in there for channels. Nobody when using beep beep collars really wants to buy a bunch of collars all within that range. A collar on 154.605 is going to interfere with a collar on 154.60475 something fierce! In order to have more channels they will have to buy more channels from the FCC. This also goes for Marshall. Overall this is a logistic nightmare. If you have ever bought your own channel. You know that you are licensed only to operate within 25 miles from the base of operation. An extra piece of paper may allow you 50miles. It would take some work to find channels that could be used nationwide without problems. Then it would have to be allowed by the FCC, and I bet for an extra cost. As it is now I could be licensed on 151.805 here in WI. Then you also have a license for it in say ID. As it is now. Marshall will most likely have to use the same channels as Garmin and Tinyloc. What a mess that will be. These same rules also limit the amount of power. Which does nto increase the line of sight as I have gone over many times. It will increase the volume within that line of sight circle. This will come at a cost though. More power means more battery use. AN evil circle. Also keep in mind that this is a digital signal. Most of us know what happened when our cell phones went from analog to digital! IF there were a way around the line of sight thing. One would think the cell companies would do it. Rather than have to spend the big bucks on all the towers so you have coverage.

I don't know if all the photo's I have seen are of prototypes or not, but I don't like how the antenna is supported with a couple zip strips. Seem's like R&D could have come up with something a lot better.

I'm curious to find out if the Lock feature will help eliminate some of the interference....

Perhaps by Pairing it the System could ignore other Collars.. and this could help alieve the situation.

I just posted this in the other DC 40 thread;

I was hoping for some kind of good change. The new collar material is the only good improvement I can see.

We still have to use the 220.
So no fix apparently to burning them up.
No bigger screen.

As for the DC 40 the collar range is the same with what appears to be the same battery only a increased 120 setting that will make the current battery last longer but still only put to 48 hrs.

I am not sure just how the 4 digit pen is going to work but if it is like the motorola radios it should be fine.

I hope they are not doing like the cell phone companies. by having the technology to make all the updates we want and doing a few each year so we all keep buying to get the upgrades.

This just makes me want Marshall to come through for us all. I know Garmin leads with the gps. But they just dont listen to or know what a doghunter needs.

I personally will wait until August 1st and see if Marshall will come through. The rumors i am hearing are it is worth waiting for.

If a marshall rep is reading this please at least let us know what we are waiting for ( some of the features it will have) and if the problems using them close to a high powered raido has been addresed.

Overall I dont think the changes are worth any additional money. but i hope there is other changes we are unaware of at this time that will make it a better collar. and i look foward to someone other than me testing one out.

All this talk of new stuff sure is great, but it seems now that as soon as we buy somthing 6 months or so later they are going to have somthing better on the market. Guess I am just going to keep using the DC-30 until the DC-90 come out. Maybe by then they will have enough improvents to make it worth the purchass of a new system.

i have to agree with everyone on here. the dc 40 does not seem worth the extra money. at all. firts off noone i know will ever whos a 120 sec update. because by then all are hounds will be in some road, and we wouldn't even know. and the pin is not a big deal. because my hunting partners will only track a like one or two of eachothers dogs. and just track our own.

the only thing i am hoping for out of the dc 40.even though they say its has a 7 mile range just like the dc 30 ( even though i have only been able to get 1.6 miles onec in a blue moon) i hope that the single is stronger so that it might be ble to track farther. i wish somebody would give me info if the single will be stronger at all, because thats the only thing i reall care about.

It won't be stronger, They are both 2 watt transmitt radios.

I agree with buddy, and I not only do i beleive you will have no increase in range. you may find with the new collar not having the gps receiver on the top of the collar but back in the box on the bottom of the collar it is likely it will loose gps signal alot more resulting in less tracking time.

I have had wondered about the GPS being under the dogs neck as well. I doubt it will make much of a difference though. I might but I doubt it. I say this as I can get a signal from within my house. I have what is called a MI roof. That is double every thing except shingles. Don't get a signal all the time, but can get one. Which is impressive. The Garmin is the only one of 5 GPS units that I can get a signal from inside my house. My old lowrance global map 100 could rarely get a signal through the windshield!!!

We have come a long way in the last few years with the GPS thing. Maybe collars wil use that only some day. It will come at a cost though!!! Until then guess we have to wait for the laws of physics to be changed.

Will the pin# stop a collar theif being able to load a stolen collar into another Astro?
Also, will the battery box be even bigger now, with the gps contained inside it?
