Re: What is your favorite type of hound!
The bluetick is my favorite. Its the best looking dog for me. For hunting purposes however, I dont care what it is. Its the dog that hunts the best that matters.
Re: What is your favorite type of hound!
thats strange i have seen just the opposite. plenty of consistancy in plotts and blueticks but no consistancy in walkers.
Re: What is your favorite type of hound!
i have two walkers, three redticks, one blue tick, two plotts, one mountain cur and three cattahoulas that are all consistant. yall worry about what every body eles dog does to much. we run with HOUNDS where i am at no plotts or walkers or blueticks or anything else just HOUNDS

Re: What is your favorite type of hound!
i have yet to see any redticks run bear. when i lived in florida they ran alot of deer with them, but i agree what ever works for you is what you should run. for me it is plotts and blueticks. both have alot of gritt and a natural instinct to hunt bears, every dog is defferent just like people, some are just better than others.

You said it brother. I prefer hounds that catch game. That's what I feed.

No consistency? Lol. Mine consistently eat, sleep, and poop, same as any old plott or bluetick. I've seen mine do if for twenty years. After you've hunted hounds for more than two or three months, Frank, you'll know it's true too. Some even eat, sleep, and poop more... Lol.

just cause someone has done something for twenty years dont mean they are doing it right. for instance i have seen plenty of people that have shot bows over twenty years and still cant hit there ass with either hand.

I don't know, I've seen theses dogs eat alot of dogfood over those years. I don't ever recall one of them choking or anything, Lol. They do pretty good at sleeping and pooping too, I don't think I've ever seen them do it wrong. Lol.

i will say this. if ya aint never seen a redtick run a bear i would invite you to come see my english female. i'm not meaning this in a hateful way by no means. i have one that to me is a real dog from truck to tree. she caught two bears by herself last year. but i do agree we do run hounds and preferably the ones that catch game

Re: What is your favorite type of hound!
last that i checked the post stated "what is your favorite type of hound?" AS i clearly stated what ever works for you! I personally like plotts and blueticks. Last i checked everyone is entitled to there own opinion, i just know what i have personally seen in the last few months of our season.
Re: What is your favorite type of hound!
if a redtick wont run a bear then there aint a breed of dog on this planet that will. as far as grit goes most of our bears dont tree they bay on the ground (EASTERN NC = BIG BEARS and most bears over 350 dont like to climb these little ass trees around here) so they must not do to bad cause we sure kill a plenty of bears. plotts, blueticks, redticks, walkers we run them all and you can get good dogs out of any breed. i have one walker and one plott that are my trail dogs, two of my redticks will run a cold cold track and every damn dog i have will bay. we have turned out over 100 dogs in our club in one day, dogs from VA,TN,WV and NC (oh yeah i almost forgot, a couple of blueticks from UTAH and IDAHO, imagine that) and a redtick will run just as damn good as any of them. you might want to get out moreferjr wrote:i have yet to see any redticks run bear. when i lived in florida they ran alot of deer with them, but i agree what ever works for you is what you should run. for me it is plotts and blueticks. both have alot of gritt and a natural instinct to hunt bears, every dog is defferent just like people, some are just better than others.

Re: What is your favorite type of hound!
So I'm just curious about all this talk about breeds. Are you guys really considering breeds, or are you talking about color? For the dogs that I have hunted, 99% of them are hounds (breed) in different color variations. I do understand that these color variations are also sometimes the "breed". However, most of the dogs (mutts in hound bodies) that I have owned and been around for at least several years now, are just hounds with different color variations. There are a lot of dry ground lion dogs in the southwest that are just black and white. What breed would these dogs fall under? Without honest registration practices following very stringent guidelines, what does color mean? I have seen dogs of every color perform well for all different game species. I have also seen dogs of every color that shouldn't have been allowed to contribute to ANY gene pool for any reason. If you have the knowledge, understanding, and time, you can breed any color variety to be successful in hunting the game of your choice. I understand having faforites when it comes to color. I personaly love hi tans - what breed are those?

Re: What is your favorite type of hound!
My favorite for bear is Black and Tan and Plotts. A couple of the best BEAR dogs that ever lived around here where BTs, but I have seen plotts be BEAR dogs in greater number.
I prefer the nose (strike/trail), treeing, and ease of training with a BT and the grit and stick/drive of a plott.
Have had some really good walkers that where BEAR dogs, fast and hard treeing. Have also had some that where deer crazy, slick treeing, dog fighting, and easily bear whipped. Of course all these dogs came out of similar breeding which probably says more about the line than the breed.
Too little experience with blues 1-3, english 1-3, redbones 0-3, and leopards 0-2 to judge the breed.

Re: What is your favorite type of hound!
I don't have a breed preference. I have seen good ones and culls in most breeds. (some of each out of the same litters).
The type of hound I like is probably what most dog men like.
cold nose
good temperament
fast
lots of bottom
heart
gritty but not stupid
big mouth
*lookin at the meat when I get there
I can deal with a dog that is weak in some areas as long as he or she can look at the meat.

any dog that will bay a bear i dont care if it had 5 legs and was purple i think any breed you can have great dogs and have your culls but from what ive been hearing about these plots you cant go wrong for bear
