If you have older dogs that know what a lion is then why are you waisting your time with scent training? these pups have hundreds of years of breeding to chase cats. they are pre programed to do it. why not just throw em in with the big dogs and let them do the teachin on real game? I start throwin my pups on the track right behind my old female at 3 months old. I've never had one yet that didn't figure the whole process after just a few times out. I'm not trying to be negative on ya for your training methods, nor am I trying to brag on myself for my methods. I am simply puzzled why somone would waist their time chasin a piss bottle instead of the real thing. good luck either way, Jared.

sheimer wrote:No, I don't use the lion scent. I use the bobcat scent from Grawes. I do similar to what Mike recommends. My two older dogs that I have now as well as the two pups I have were and are all ran on Grawes. They all respond exactly the same as on a real track. The first real lion track my pups saw was a two day track and they took it and were gone. They were only ran on two Grawes tracks first and that was it.

Here is what I use to make tracks with:

Here is what the "legs" and "feet" look like:

I just cover the end of the legs with scent and cover it with a dishtowel. That way no scent actually hits the ground, just what slowly seeps through the cloth. I can run a track for a mile or so without messing with it. It spaces the scent about the same as a bobcat would normally walking. Every so often I will pick it up and cause the dogs to make a "loss" and then I'll drop it again and go on with the trail.

That is one of the coolest things I have ever seen! did you think that up on your own? that is way better than draggin a rag. but the question I still have is..... why not just go throw em on a smokin hot bobcat track in the woods?

Jared, it is my own little invention. I would really prefer to use the real track maker, but our season's don't allow it during the summer months in Montana. This way my "snow dogs" get a shot at "dry ground". You'd be supprised how well they do in the summer at about 80 degrees in the wind. I let the track set for up to 12 hours and really make them work. (I don't see a lot of them end in trees, but they sure are fun)

this is what the end of the first real lion track looked like:

thanks,

The "track maker" is not attached to the wheeler, it was just leaning on it for the picture. I can either just walk along with it or if I'm being lazy, I will have a buddy or one of my kids drive while I set backwards on the rack and drag it along. I figure the the rubber tires probably leave less scent than I do.

I was messing around with some 12 week old pups,I dont take them hunting with me because i dont want to get them bluffed up, these pups will try to fallow the older dogs and really show a lot of interest, they already tree my wifes housecat when they are loose around the house,it was funny the first time I let them in the house at 8 weeks old they treed the cat on the back of the sofa, them being so young is why I dont put them with the old dogs on the real thing

 i was stoked this evening when my grawes scent showed up i ordered 16oz of bobcat and 16oz of coon and when i opened the box i ended up with bobcat and lion no coon scent! so tomorrow i will have to give them a call and see if they will straighten it out. on a better not the bobcat scent seems to be good stuff i laid a little track near the house and let my pups out they ran to the tree tried jumping up in it then circled around the tree for a bit lookin for the cat. let my older hound run it afterwards (hes never been on cat or trained for it at all) he made it to the tree stood up and looked in the tree for a lil bit then ended up markin his territory on the tree... idk if thats good or not but he at least made it to the tree so its a start
