I am glad to hear there are still some areas in Mexico that have not been taken over by the banditos!!!!
It is true ....Mike Leonard he has more knowlage of hounds and hound hunting than most men today could ever have, his name has been around for many years in the hound world..I wish I had 5% of the knowlage Mike has, I can not remember my own name half the time let alone what pup was sired by someones male 15 years ago!!!!!!
Did you do the jaguar work with Tony Rivera south of Escarciga in Campeche?
I am not sure but I believe a syudy and collar project was done there not to long after I last saw that part of the jungle in 1983...

I would love to see that Old Photo of Dale Lee and the jaguar...

Is not safe to come to hunt to Mexico at this time. At least in the states where I live and have ranches, does are the State of Tamaulipas and Veracruz.

Its getting a little bit better, but its not safe yet. Here where I live in the city of Tampico, they have kidnap at least 40 wealthy people that I know. This has being going for the last two years. Most of the wealthy people in this city have left and went to live to the states, mostly in South Texas area. All those kidnaps have not kill any wealthy man, but they have take part of there fortune.

Both governors of this state have less than 9 months in charge of the goverment. They have being doing a better job than there predecesors but still is not safe. To be able to go my ranch I have to rent and old pick year 91, because if you go in the highways even during the day in a kind of new pickup, they will at gun point steal it from you. There are no conceal weapon permits here in Mexico. So for the outlaws is real easy to kidnap or steal vehicles.

The President of Mexico has done a titanic job to fight the cartels, but the war is not over and it will take still some more years and we have to see who wins the elections next year.

I have being friends with Mike Leonard for quite some years and have some hounds from him and Chrs Todd of Arizona.

I have hunted with Memo Jaramillo in the State of Nuevo Leon and he has good hounds of the Runnie Walkers breed very much like the once they use in the South Texas area for hunting bobcats.

Saludos to Mike and Memo.

Holy crap it is a small world.

Memo, I don't know if you will remeber me or not but I was in Mexico two years ago on the Jaguar study with you in Tony's camp. I was one of the gringos from Montana, not the old ugly one the younger good looking one. :D I sure enjoyed visiting with you. Have you seen or heard from Tony latley? Tell Wayne hi. I have a picture of us all standing on the bridge while we were letting the dogs water I could post some time. But you may already have one. Hope you and your boy are doing well. I sure would like to get down there again sometime.

Here are a couple of pictures of the Jaguar camp that I was in with Memo in 2009. The first one is in the jungle looking for jaguar sign. Pictured is Pancho, Memo's son (sorry I cannot remember his name), Enuk (with his head down) and Memo. The little walker dog is a dog that I flew down there with. The second picture is of about everyone that was in the camp. There is a couple of guys in the picture that are definitely in the who's who of Lion and Jaguars hunters.

As for the original question about going into Mexico to hunt or run dogs. We had very little trouble. But we had all of our T's crossed and I's dotted. We flew into a resort town and traveled with a very respectable person. One of the only problems that we had was that we had no documention of dogs being wormed. Because of doing it ourselves luckly we had a little bottle of flea and tick remover and that got us by. One day we did get pulled over by the federallies (sp) just as we were pulling out of the jungle. Everything turned out O.K. but let me tell you I was sweating like a whore in church. They had shotguns and AR's pointed at us and they were really speakin some spanish and I no comprendy that.

Doogie, I am going to ask you to please remove the picture that you posted. This is just a good way to have a thread go stray. Thankyou

Memo I will send you a PM with my E-mail. Send me a couple pictures and I will put them up for you. Jason

Good lookin hounds, the crew looks a bit rough though!!
Tell me a bit about those B&T's in the pickup..
How did they do in that heat and humidity?
It almost killed me when I was there, never seemed you could get away from it even in the early morning...
Were you able to put any cats up and get them collared.

Brent,
I can't remember all of the breeding on the dogs there but a couple of the black n tans were trackdown breeding. One was from Mexico and one of the other ones was from Montana. A couple of the high tans I belive were Richard Holcomb breeding. I went down there with Scott Thielman who is a die hard Trackdown black n tan man and he has been to Mexico quite a few times. He kept his dog in a heated garage, while I roaded the heck out of mine. Next time I will be keeping my dog in a heated garage and forget the roading. The black dog faired way better off in the heat then the little walker dog did. I also did not fair that well let me tell you it was hot, as you already know. We were down there in March when we left home it was 10 below when we got to Southern Mexico it was 90 during the day with high humitity. We would start hunting about 3 in the morning and had to be done by about 9am.

No we did not catch any jaguars. Kind of a long story but at the last minute Tony R. who we were hunting with had to change areas. Which was bad luck for us, having a guide that had never been in the area before. But that was the cards we were dealt so we had to make the best of it. Still a very good time met some very nice and knowleagable people. BUT I still have to catch a jaguar so I will head back down some day. Jason

Thanks for deleting that Doogie!

This is as good a reading as there has been for some time! I can't wait to have a visit with Richard.

Jason
Thanks...that high tan looks alot like some of Bart Lancasters breeding.
I believe it takes a hound a bit of time in the area they hunt like that jungle to get conditioned to the high humidity and heat.
When we are running leopard an early start is curtial, a 3am start till the heat kills the scent which is about the same time around 10am.
If we are on a cat sometimes we can keep it moving well into mid day but it's touch..
Anyone know where Richard is hanging his hat these days?

THANKS TO ALL
you are very nice, I'm no expert I have 35 years of hunting and have many errors and every passing day I learn something with my dogs. and I always look at this site to learn from you.
It's difficult to hunt from the semi-desert, then on the beach and in the jungle
in the mountains and the plains
the dog has to be broke, no monkeys animals do not know wath family is, dog, cat, raccoon skunk or badger etc. I have never seen in the zoo, we have lots of exotic wildlife
I send my friend a Jeson photos to put here
my dogs, cats running when they bark
mabe is bobcat, ocelot lion, jaguar, jaguarundi all depends on where you hunt, only love this.
