Catching your hounds.

Post by jst »

Of all the guys I have hunted with only one has been able to catch his hounds at will. The rest have to catch them at the tree. How do you guys go about it.

Not saying my hounds will call off a smoking track, but I have called them off cold tracks before. I contribute it to lots of hunting and handling. I start them off by making sure they know their names, when I call their names I want their head to turn towards me, then I work them with the e-collar. When God (the e-collar) speaks to them they seem to listen.

I've always had good luck with my dogs. Even if they won't come back right when I call them all I gotta do is start the truck and they come running. I remember I had a Redbone female once, we could be a mile away from the truck and I'd say "load up" and she'd go back and find the truck and be waiting in the box. lol Couldn't tree a coon to save her life though.

As many hunters as around here if they came back after a truck started.
You would have 6 more in your kennel!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My e caller has a tone button on it. As long as she is not on a hot track I just hit that and she will be back. Otherwise I have to yell and I dont like doing that. Strains my voice. :D

Same here...we do alot of ground work with the e-collar (Hearing Aid  ) once our hounds mature some and know what alion or bobcat is. They still have their stubborn streaks at times but if I call and they do not respond they get a tone, after that they get bumped on #1, they usually do not get past #2. Like I said its a hearing aid but must be used correctly

Lots of training when they are young. I keep my pups with me 24/7 for the first 6-8 months when I get them. They go everywhere with me all day. They learn everything they will ever need in that time. My dogs only wear an e-collar about 2-3 times in thier lives to train them off of deer and elk when they are just under a year old. I don't run e-collars at all when I'm hunting.

Yeah this is what we do.. Got a couple that wouldn't leave a hot track unless you rolled them with the collar.. But generally I can tone them off.. Got to be able to do it.. Might save your dogs life...

Used it this weekend with a gun ho young dog.. Just waited until she was in between barks and would tone her, call her name (okay scream).. Took a few times but I got her back..

Just general handling.. If you never mess with your dogs until you take them hunting, you are not going to be able to do it.. Can't stand a dog that won't listen to you or is dragging you around on a leash.. Spend some time handling them :)

I use the tone on the TriTronics too. Never called'em back from a hot track, but only when they're generally messing around or when I want them back at my side for whatever reason.

Mine wear loud Swiss bells, so I give them some time to hear the tone before giving the correction next. The bells can cover up the sound of the tone when they're gumbootin-it down the trail, as the tone really isn't that loud.

I use food reward when they obey and come back, be sure reinforce positive behaviour.

SIMPLE it is what you call TRAINING. A hound can be trained to mind and handle the same as a lab or any other dog. If you need to run an e-collar on your dog to get it to listen then you haven't taught the dog anything!!

If you come up with anything, it is the most effective training method I have ever seen. It will change your image as a houndman forever.

Pay attention to what Cecil and Pete and others say too. Cecil's post alone is worth the price of going there.
