I don't normally tell on myself . It seems best to make folks earn the story by hunting with you. But here's one I remember real clear .. except the part I don't. Anyway I was out one afternoon running some younger dogs and pups mostly doing deer proofing and hoping for a easy enough coon tree After to make them feel good. Well we started down the river and it got dark and no deer so I was letting the dogs hunt out a Area and saw a bobcat watching the commotion from a bank above us and started sneaking a peek at him ever so often. Well some how one of the dogs got high enough to wind it or notice it. So I'm half heartedly chasing them down trying to get them distracted enough they might loose it. No such luck and he heads for some low hills with brush. I think here'smy chance so start really trying to catch up and come through the bushes bent over just in time to see this dog high centered in a bush with a badger chewing on his armpit. Just as iI get kinda straightened up the dog grabbed him and slung him right on me.well I like to think it was some sort of intelligent thought process but I turn and jump over the bushes to my right. I might have made it feet first but the badger was hanging on and tripped me into a beautiful swan dive. Well as I went through the top of the bush I realized it was over a wash. I land face first and shattered my light across my forehead. When I came to it was dark and quiet. I didn't know if it had been ten seconds or hours. I got back to the truck cussing those hounds the whole way for ng me into a trap and abandoning me.

that's a good story pegleg. reminds me of the time my older brother went coon hunting with me. he came home on break from the air force and was asking if my dogs treed coon. hell yea I say, praying to god that they would finally tree a coon. so we head out on grandpas ranch and turn them loose. they open like they always did shortly after we turned out and I think great! another deer race . they come up teed in a few minutes and they had a momma coon and three half grown kittens in a short scrub tree about fifteen ft tall in the middle of a patch of poison oak and black berries. so my brother wants to catch a baby and tame it?? I think back on all the mean stuff he has pulled on me in the past and who am I to stand in the way??? so he takes his coat off planning on wrapping it up with the coat. he gets up to the lowest coon and puts the grab on it and vice versa lmao. down they come in a screaming heap on top of the dogs in the middle of the briars. the coon don't want any part of the dogs so he climbs up on top of my brothers head, and the dogs follow. by he time he got out of them briars he was tore up something badl!!! I asked him if he wanted me to make a catch pole and he said a few words buddy would ban me for and shot every one of the coons.! that was his first and last time he went out with my dogs but at least they caught him a coon like the super stars I wanted them to be. lmao that was probably the only coon they treed all that winter.

Here's one that's a little different. I was on a Bear call up Catching Cr. and had the Dogs on the Box. I was almost to the Kill and the dogs struck!! I turned loose and had a hot track going that was running around in a circle with the Dogs shutting up from time to time. Then they treed and had caught a bobcat. I was thinking a mean Bear was shutting them up, till I seen the cat.
I got back to the Rig and loaded the Dogs on the Box again. Drove about 150yds to the Sheep Kill and the Dogs struck again. I turned loose and they started Cold tracking right thru where I had just treed the Cat and Started Baying?? The Dogs had jumped the Bear in it's bed less than a 100yds from the cat tree and I guess the Bear slept thru the race!!!!!

OK, Skip!
When JC was around 6-7 yrs old, I had him along with me checking Traps and a Bear Snare.

The Bear Snare was about 50ft. off the brushy Ranch Road we were driving on. I stopped and walked over to check the snare, when a yearling Cub jumped up and let out a Baahhhh! Then off in the brush I hear RRAAAAAHH !!! I didn't have a gun on me, so I turned and started running to the pick-up.
Just as I was reaching for the handle, JC slaps the lock down and moves to the other side locking that door also!!! I said, unlock the door and he shook his head no !! I jumped in the back of the pick-up, just as the Sow busted out and ran to her cub. I jumped back down and demanded he open the Door!!! and he still shook his head. The Sow was circling me Blowing and Popping her teeth and made another run by when I finally Begged JC to unlock the F#@KING DOOR!!

I got even with JC several years (revenge is best served cold) later, when he called telling me that the gun had jammed (444Marlin) and the Bear had run him around !! I told him how to unjam the gun.
Then! I told him what my Dad had said to me, when I called with almost the same story.

Dad said, "Get Back In There And Kill That S.O.B.!!! And I Wont Tell Anybody Your Chicken S#!T"!!! JC did just that, but what a time he had!!!

Hell, I whimper getting out of bed!!
I feel Blessed when it comes to my Kids. I didn't spare the "Rod" on them! It's just, I didn't have to use it much. But they knew I would if they got out of line.
J.C. is my oldest son and JR. is my youngest son, both were raised with the hounds and on the trap line. Many of you know J.C. threw BGH and the Gatherings along with many others he's hunted with or met some where.
J.C. is the Dog man and JR. was the Chicken man. Now that the Chickens are in the P.I. I've been hoping he would start Hunting Dogs?
JR's son (my 6yr old grandson) which has been out with the Dogs before, came packing over a pup his Dad (JR) had just got for him.
Looks like I've got a new hunting partner!!!1

all jokes aside, I agree with you about you being blessed with you're children and I think anyone that has met them will say the same. now if we could get them to run for president the world would be a better place at least till we get too old to care. lol

Once cat hunting with an older Missouri coon dog I was unfamiliar with, she broke off a cat race and was baying something. I went to her and she was barking down into a hole under a big stump. I was snow blind looking into a hole and it just looked black as night down there. Then I noticed a spider web covering the hole and moving in and out with the air movement. Again, I was snow blind as it was a very bright day. So I bend down in there to clear the spider web to try and see past it. Turns out the undulating light refraction was not coming off a spider web but off a nice prime bear hide. Ha ha. I don't know who was more surprised. Probably me.

David, don't mean to steal from your story! It happened to me, but we knew what we had ( so yours is more of a surprise). When I was 18yrs old I was hunting with Leon Elliot (a Gov. Hunter) and had a bay up in a log jam up Snow Cr.
The dogs were at the bottom Baying going in and running out. We crawled around on top trying to look through and between the Logs. Then I seen a dark hole and started leaning in to focus, It hit me that it was the Bear, just as it Blew!!!!
Here's another time, when I didn't know that I was after a Bear. I had lost the dogs once and stopped on a point to listen and I could hear them. I walked around the corner trying to locate their direction and there they were just off the side of the road Barking and Baying. I ran up and they were at the end of a culvert. I bent over and looked in. (I bet I felt the way you did) when a Bear made a lunge at me!!
