Oops! They will tell you by breed what your dogs lineage is. Have any of you guys running crossbreed dogs ever tried it? My best dog was picked up as a pup at a trash dump!

This would establish a starting point, once you crossed to another dog you could begin a pattern of accurate lineage from that point forward...Here is my position with UKC. No way to know how any of our registered dogs are bred if one breeder switches the papers.

Just think of how this impacts all the future crosses made? UKC down plays this but it is of epidemic proportions, even if only one set of papers become switched in registry! Think about how many pups per litter and then bred from that point forward and tell me you know how our hounds are really bred?

I'm done with UKC registered hounds for this reason, papers mean nothing unless 100% are DNA'd at birth and as far as I'm concerned should also be performance in the field proven before accepted...It's all about the money!

Mike I wish they'd start a registry like the American Bucking Bull Inc. At a year old or so you send in DNA, they send you papers back. They will tell you who the parents are and if they don't have them registered its added with a unknowns behind it.

Thomas

What reason does the Bucking Bull association give for doing this? I don't follow the bucking bulls and not able to make a rational statement and could only speculate. Would it be to possibly weed out inferior future stock and to maintain a level of excellence from a certain point of origin and then moving forward in a favorable manner with excellence in producing the level of bulls we see today vs. yesterday being a number one priority?

If so? This supports my claim of a broken registry system that allows some to do as they please for self gain vs. excellence. This could be an easy fix if only......

You guys have a very valid point. My reason for wanting to know is this little gal is one helluva bobcat dog and I'd like to make some more just like her if I could.

Can you or have you hunted with her father and grandfather? I would breed to the one she is most like if possible. Dewey

Mike I'm unsure of why exactly its done that way. My feelings are it would take out any doubt's of back handed breeding and you'd know exactly what your getting. I would think Shorty Gorham might have some insight.

Dewey,
She was picked up at a dumpster when she was a tiny pup We don't know what she is. She appears to be half running walker but no clue to the other part. She has a brother that I have never seen but am told he looks purebred walker and is a very good fox dog. If I could find him I've considered making a brother/sister breeding

The UKC, states their goal as to "improve the breed", however they register hounds that do not meet their own standards and do very little to enforce shady breeders. We now have sub-species of all the hound breeds. I spoke with UKC about this and they did not want to hear it, of course they are always willing to cash our checks.
Service dogs and many other dog breeds, that do not meet standards get a big stamp on the papers " not for breeding". If UKC would put something like this into action, we would see great improvement. I guess, if UKC would just do the job we are paying them for.
With registered hounds, the best we can do, is with the ones with have. The mentioned DNA test and the one offered by UKC is very basic, but DNA testing is a very powerful tool.
Two of the most important parts of DNA testing is one, identify diseases early and the other is to identify specific traits, that can be passed on to future generations.
I found a dog at a dumpster myself, it was a Whippet and the first time I saw one. Since it was at the dumpster and it look skinny, I thought it was starving but, come to find out she was in perfect shape. That Whippet caught a many a coon on the ground, take a beating, but never loss it desire to catch and try to kill a coon.

DNA?

Post by Goose »

Kind of side tracked but is there a DNA test you can buy to collect at home and send off to get the results of whom a sire might be. I was considering on taking my gyp and my father in laws two males to the Maury show and having it done there but my gyp is shy around crowds. On a serious note one of my hog dogs got bred and I'm not sure what dog is the sire, she is yeller and 3/4 BMC 1/4 BLK/TN, all of her pups come out yeller and there's 3 possibilities of what the sire might be one being a full blood YBMC male or a red male cur or the mailman ( who happens to be a roaming black lab). I could be wrong bc genetics are a funny thing but u figured if the mailman had got to her at least one of the pups would be showing the black genes, being as she is 1/4 BLK/tn her self. Anyone care to ellaborate?
