I just went to garmin.com and looked around on there. Updating was fast, but actually getting the the download of the website took a bit. As for how often I dont know it was my first time.

You should check for updates on a regular basis. A new update has been released for the unit, I need to check the collars for updates yet. Current version is 3.0
You do not need to go to the Garmin website!!! The easiest way to do it is to install the software that came with your unit. At that point the the webudater will be installed. So with the unit plugged into your computer. Click on the staqrt button, then garmin, then web updater. It will take you through the rest of the process. Collars are don the smae way. But the unit needs to be on, and the collar on sitting next to the unit.
