Re: Wolves Killed my Dog
You may want to try contacting your USDA office. Things may be different in MT, but here in WI they handle all the depredation stuff. There is a reimbursement program in WI for this. Does not make it better, but it is a start.

Re: Wolves Killed my Dog
Sorry to hear about your lost hound man.
We who live in the mountains are always playing with fire when we let go our hounds, wolves are everywhere!
Sad to say it's gonna happen again,I hope it's not going to be my turn.

Yes, but most of these guys are not in a position to save their hound anyhow. Other wise that would be the obvious choice.
You cannot shoot when your not there.

Re: Wolves Killed my Dog
I spoke today with the "Wolf Lady". She is in charge of the gray wolf management for the Mt FWP. Her name is Caroline something, I forgot her last name. She seems to be a nice lady who I believe is truly sorry for the loss of a dog. She said that the law in Montana reads that only stock and guard dogs are paid for after a wolf kill. Hounds are not. She recommended that we as a hound hunting community get together and push our representatives to change the law to include pets and huntng animals. I am currently waiting for a call back from my local rep. She also seemed very curious as to how many wolves were involved, as they really don't know how many there are. I guess that I assumed that since they were part of the government, they just knew.
From now on, I will mark all wolf tracks on my GPS and take a picture and every so often drop an e-mail to her with all the dates incuded. I believe that if we force accurate information upon them about how many wolves there really are, we may have a chance to increase the quotas.
Thanks again for all the condolences,
Scott
ps, I kinda like the parvo idea.

Re: Wolves Killed my Dog
Here is the solution!!! Every one of us should be hunting wolves when we arent runnin dogs. I say this and i have a degree in wildlife, the people that make decisions regarding the laws of game/wildlife are only interested in their pocket books! lets make our own choices out there and decide what to take or let run another day. Hunters are the true conservationists

HOW BOUT IT!!!

Re: Wolves Killed my Dog
This makes me want to sell off the pack and get into hunting varmints. Up here in the Yaak there has got to be at least 100 or so. Seems a bit much for a fifty mile drainage. Too many trees to get much shooting in. There is an outfit out of Missoula called LOBO Watch run by Toby Bridges that seems pretty well bent on doing something about the problem. I am going to join their club and see how much noise I can make. Sorry for your loss Sheimer.
