Here's one for you to try and swallow: In the area where I leraned to hunt bobcat, there was a group of old time hunters that had recently died or where going to die within five or so years. These were hard hard hunters with streight cat dogs. They hunted mostly females. All their best ones were spayed because they didn't want to be bothered with the heat cycle or unplanned pups. They had hunting to do and would let nothing come in the way of it. If they needed pups they would breed a young female, and then if they needed her in their hunting machine, she would be spayed.

I guess I understood the point, but I sure thought it was tragic. It did not seem like a very good breeding program :? And of course, when those men died their dogs were completely gone in one generation. They never let their dogs outside of their circle any way, so I guess that is how they wanted it. :(

There was a saying in that area: " Hunters dont breed and breeders dont hunt."
I know it is proven wrong by a few shining examples, but I have also seen some truth to their saying.

I'm in the same camp as pegleg and floridacathunter, if it isn't breeding stock or potential breeding stock there isn't space in the kennel for it. But I can fully understand that not everyone needs to be a breeder.

Here's something I've noticed about males that have been cut. It does something to them so that other males think they are a female in heat or something. Put a cut male in with one that isn't and most of the time they will be trying to breed him

I've seen it go horribly wrong. Dog can end up useless unless hunted alone or with females. Also seen it work. The best dog I ever seen was cut. Would walk on my lips thru broke glass to try a pup out of that dog. To each their own but mine will stay intact and problem free or they won't be here. JMO

Two questions for you ankle express! If that dog had not been cut would he have been as good as he was? And two do you really think a pup out of him would have ever stacked up to him? I have bred great dogs over the years and some good ones came out but it seemed like none ever matched their super parent! I like a certain line of dogs to breed and usually get pretty decent dogs that i like, but i see to many people hoping the breeding will make the dog and not the hunter!

My male was fixed at 2... He just got stupid around females.. I don't bear hunt, so I don't know about bear grit.. My male started hunting with no distractions and has been stapled up more then once from lions bayed up in the rocks.. It did not ruin his hunt at all...

I don't have a problem with other uncut males trying to ride him either.. Maybe my other male just knows..

Good question. Can't say for sure, as we all know, but it sure hurt not being able to try. Dog come from out your way as a young cut dog and a couple guys on here could tell us why that was. I've actually hunted alot of cut dogs and at the time we had cut and uncut mates and half mates that we hunted then as well. The family as a whole displayed all the desirable traits we were after but that one dog was uncanny special. Even over the other three cut mates & several other half mates. All seeing the same stuff basically. What I hunt today is two generations away from those dogs and was built off the uncut side. Traits are still there and they suit me. Nothings perfect and they got faults. Will always wander how big or small those would have been with the other dog though. But they still work and I'll try to move it on to another generation. Will die wandering how the super star could have played a role. Had it not been necesary for some good explainable reason, and sniffing bitches as a puppy ain't it for me, then what a waste of a good chance. JMO

Hey, talked to a long time friend(30+ years) Probably one of the best cat hunters I've ever known. He has cut several hounds and seems to think it has, without exception, made them better catdogs. I ain't arguing with success, but I aint cutting none. It's good we can do it like the Burger King says, "Have it your way". I'll hush now.
