Myself and about 6 of my hound buddies hunt bear horse/mule back. Probably not as good of method as rigging now day, but its alot of fun and we manage to catch a good number of bears too.

I really like some of N.M's mtns terrain it makes me think i picked the wrong state every time i drive through there. the mtns across the line from me are the same as here but head north a little and it gets real pretty. hunting from vehicles maybe easier on the hunters and provide more chances at game but to me it isn't the experience horseback hunting is.
Re: hunting bear on horses or mules???
We go hunting 4 or 5 times a year on our mules. I love to go anytime I have an
opportunity to ride. We normally go on the mules while the weekend worriers are
out and about to stay clear of everyone. We have got on a bear every time we
hit the high back country here in Utah. It is always a blast and we have a ton
of Great memories. I would recommend a mule in the country we ride in. They have
the power to climb the steep rough terrain. They can go all day, and are so sure footed you don't every have to worry about a slip or a fall. They also have the ability to jump over any died fall you might come across.
We took a local kid who rides once every two weeks and his horse had a hard
time keeping up. It about fell on him about 3 or 4 times that day as well. We were all eating out lunch and drinking our Pepsi's having a good time, and it was all he could do to hold on. It was funny to watch anyways we have two tags here in Utah so getting excited. good luck to you all this spring.
